CD drive will not read/write CD-Rs

My cd drive will not recognize a CD-R. It works fine with other CDs, DVDs, and it will read/write a CD-RW.

I cleaned it and reinstalled drivers, but nothing's worked.

Any ideas?

How old is it? Which OS are you using? You shouldn't need to install drivers for a CD-ROM drive.

double check you're putting in a blank CD images/smilies/smile.gif

i always leave written coasters around. other than that, i can't suggest much. just reinstall your buring software.

If it's an old CD burner, it may not work with newer CD-Rs. I've had this problem as well with one of my older PCs.

The computer is about 3 years old, with XP SP2.

I thought it may have been a problem with newer CDs too, but it started happening halfway through a pack of CDs, unless half the pack was older and half was new. images/smilies/rolleyes.gif

I've tried a dozen different brands but nothing works.

Doesn't matter which software I use, nothing works. If I go into My Computer and look at the drive it says a CD ROM is inserted with 0 Total Size and 0 Total Space. images/smilies/mad.gif

The lasers are probably shot. CD-R's use a different coating compared to CD-Roms, CD-RW's, DVD's etc. They don't tend to reflect light back as strongly so the laser may have become too inefficient to read them. All I can suggest is finding some proper silver CD-Rs as they are better at reflecting the light, they are quite expensive though.

Well, I plan on having this for quite a while longer, anyone know how much laptop cd burners cost?

In the UK they are quite a lot, around £50 was the cheapest I found. Hence I went for an external for cheaper.

Can it also burn CDs? I dont care much about burning DVDs (Other than Top Gear or other TV shows I have). I know nothing about DVD burners, so..

Could also be a bad batch of cds... I had a 50 pack once that worked perfectly halfway through, and then from one disc on all the following were dead. Naturally I brought the cd burner to the store where I bought it and got a replacement (a better one, btw...) and came home only to discover that it wouldn't burn as well. Right before I started reinstalling windows, I checked with another batch of cds and it worked just fine... images/smilies/wink.gif

I heard of that happening and thought that too, but since it stopped working I've bought 3 different packs and stole ~6 different brands of CDs from friends to test.
