I use vlc if everything else fails. Comes in quite handy if you don't want to download a exotic codec of some sort each time a file doesn't work with wmp. http://www.videolan.org/

Sometimes people rip using AC3 for sound, use K-Lite Codec pack, it comes with everything you need.

You can always get your file analyzed with GSpot.
Gspot also tells you if the right codecs are installed and which one to install.. http://www.headbands.com/gspot/download.html |

I tells you that the video has been encoded via Xvid and the audio via ac3. You can see under stats that you have the codecs needed to play the files. However, you have two xvid codecs installed. Could this be causing the problem ?

a) try that on another pc
b) install the KLite codec pack (FULL) (link in my sig) it should work fine. Its not a problem to have multiple decoders installed. What are you using to play the file? Try MediaPlayerClassic (Comes with Klite) have you changed any settings in the AC3 CP ? |

please DON'T install junk like k-lite codec pack
there's no need to install a bunch of codecs when you don't need them ...they often mess up one another codec is short for encoder-decoder and for playing a videofile you only need the decoder part ffdshow filters for video playback http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/f...2.exe?download and ac3filter for sound together with mediaplayer classic http://sourceforge.net/project/showf...ckage_id=84358 will play every videofile around ...and everything is opensource

I have never found a problem with codec packs, and I need the entire codec, I do DVD-Rips and lots of conversions.

I agree with fluke667: FFDshow is a very powerful codec. I only use FFDshow.
I have never a problem with playing video (on mutiple pc's) I would indeed uninstall every other codec (configuration -> software) and install ffdhow (see fluke667's post). By the way, you should also click the 'render' button on the bottom of GSPOT, so it tries to play the file. If there's something wrong, Gspot tells you. On my pc, everything works with Windows Media Player. Another very good player is BSplayer. www.bsplayer.org edit: I also make XviD's from my band's live performances just with FFDshow, i never downloaded something else... |

I'm a big fan of the codec pack Codecs All in 1.
http://www.codecpack.com/allin1.php I've found that it includes every codec you'll ever need except the TSCC codec. Anyway the pack is updated constantly anyway.
