Car: 2006 MY07 Astra SRi Turbo Rep Power: 82 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | There's plenty of places selling domain names - I use GoDaddy.com based on others recommendations. Apparently their hosting isn't great, but you don't need that - all you need is their domain registry service. Here's how it works: - Buy the domain - Sign up with Google Apps - part of that process will involve changing the DNS records set up with GoDaddy for your domain - but don't worry, it's easy and Google give you all the directions you need (hell, I managed it...). - In Google Apps set up your account(s) - you can have as many as you want, and you can also create a 'catch-all' email account that will receive all email sent to accounts on your domain that don't exist. Which means when you sign up for websites etc you can just make up a domain name, i.e. topgearrocks@domainname.com, and the emails will go to that catch-all. Very, very handy. - Set up the new accounts in your email client.

IMAP support is a godsend. GoDaddy is good for .com's, but any other specific ones (eg .ca) will sometimes have specific resellers. For instance, .ca is sold by Netfirms. |

IMAP is portable across systems unlike POP3. I have been using Google Apps for quite awhile with my own domains and it works flawlessly.

| Lazy Head Dude | +1 except I vote for just using the GMail app. Viper007Bond.com's and FinalGear.com's e-mail are both hosted by Google Apps and I use the GMail interface for both.

But as for GMail interface vs. reading it via IMAP, I prefer the web interface due to thumbnails, easy replying, filtering, etc.

I love Google as a mail provider but I prefer the dedicated client interface and it just works faster than a web-based client. Personal preference, really. |

| you could get a domain and redirect the mail to that address if that's what I think you mean. Another +1 for google apps, got 2 addresses through them now on a domain and works flawlessly.

Rep Power: 23 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Sorry for the bump but things god massively behind schedule and I;m only getting around to this now I will be getting my domain off GoDaddy and signing up for google mail service. I need to be able to check my e-mails from 3 places - home, office and cell phone. I use outlook right now for mails and calender (but only at home). My question is, how can all 3 devices to synced up together? I mean, when I get a mail, I want to have it on both computers and my mobile device. I guess the outlook Calender can't be synced between two different computers can it?

| Set up your mail programs at your home/office/on your cell to not delete messages off the server once downloaded. In Thunderbird, this looks like "Tools -> Account Settings -> Server Settings -> Leave Messages On Server". That way, you don't have to fiddle with syncing or any of that crap; everyone will just download the mail message as soon as they see it, instead of the first device seeing it and saying "THIS IS MINE >:O" and nobody else getting it. | |
