Default Disappearing hard drive

Was playing NFS and mid-save, it "froze". After a while, I could alt+tab and this ballon was showing:

http://img232.imageshack.us/img232/6320/diskerrorva3.png

The drive wasn't being listed in My Computer or anything.

So, I turned off my computer and turned it back on. Was showing up fine in BIOS and then in My Computer. So I went "whatever" and back to NFS. Then it did it again a minute or two later.

What gives?

Yes, you definitely need a new pc!

Maybe the drive is dying? Try a diagnostic tool on it to see what it says? SMART or how do they call that?

sounds like ur hdd is packing up, try a full scandisk and take it from there.
Also check ur IDE/SATA cable, maybe its loose or something. If not, then its either 1) HDD problem or 2) PSU problem (less likely to happen)

Ran a quick ScanDisc, no errors. Ran the long ass one, again, no errors.

Been fine for the past couple hours after I fiddled around with it's SATA cable, so I'm just gonna write it off as a loose cable. I did take the opportunity though to backup the really important stuff off that drive. images/smilies/smile.gif

Thanks all.

I've had a similar problem before (sporadically for several years actually), and in the end it turned out to be a slowly dying hard disk.

Aye - same here. I've had it happen to me twice, so backing up is definitely a good move, and putting a few pennies aside for a replacement is a good idea (after all, it can be moved to the new computer when it comes... images/smilies/wink.gif ).

Shit, the first thing i backed up was my dnb collection :/ Am i a pervert or something ? images/smilies/lol.gif

Anyway, i had a hard drive failure quite some time ago, i recall some similar symptoms. Before "disconnecting" and causing delayed write errors mine used to click loudly (probably was shuffling its actuator arm around) and somewhat spin-up and spin-down. Otherwise it worked perfectly fine, exactly like yours. One day after going through it's nutcracking procedure it decided to fall back to forced PIO forever. Copying the data was jolly fun images/smilies/dry.gif Later it died completely.

Ok i feel better now that you've listened to my story images/smilies/lol.gif so i can give some advice. Run HD Tune and check the Spin Retry Count and Reallocated Sector Count SMART fields (under "health" tab). On seagate hdds both values (current and worst) should be 100. Actually while you're at it, check other values aswell images/smilies/wink.gif Before failing alltogether my drive showed a negative tendency in this department. Also, unscrew the drive and put it somwhere out of the case, so that you could hear it. May help to identify the problem better.
edit:
by unscrewing i meant detaching it from the tower, not disassembling the drive itself images/smilies/biggrin.gif
