Desktop/Fileserver is on 24/7, hasn't had a HD failure in the 6 years the case has been used for that purpose (although I tend to upgrade the hard drives (and other components) every 2 or so years).
Laptop is on when I'm home and it's plugged in, sleeping if it's in my bag at school or something. Sometimes it will go weeks without being turned all the way off. |

Not really. My linux partition is stable enough that it can just 'run' without any issues. But I usually shut it down because the computer's in my room, and there's a tiny tiny bit of noise, and it kind of affects my sleep. And it takes < 30seconds to boot, so I just switch it on in the morning, then go brush me teeth, etc.
I always shut down my W7 partition, though. Or at least hibernate. Last edited by zephyrus17; November 4th, 2009 at 1:13 PM. |

I send my Macbook to sleep when I go to sleep or leave my flat. When I carry it around I turn it off. Apart from that it's constantly on because it provides teh muzik.

Depends.
On if I want to click "hibernate" or if I just want to go to sleep. Of course if I'm downloading then I leave it on.

What I don't quite understand is why anybody with a system that supports hibernate would use "shut down" instead of "hibernate". In both cases the system is completely off, but from my experience hibernate has the following advantages:
-system loads much faster (ok depends on how much RAM it has) -I don't have to re-open all the programs and windows that were running prior to shut down/hibernate And I thought it was rather strange to omit that feature in Vista (prior to several updates). It could be made available with some console commands/registry entries but it made even less sense then, because they had the feature all along and chose not to implement it in the GUI.

FreeBSD file server is on 24/7. It also does DNS, torrenting, and dhcp so it needs to be on all the time.
Macbook is also on pretty much all the time. It is my main machine. Windows box is only on when I want to play games or watch a HD movie.

I'm part of the "turn it off club". It's in my bedroom, it has running lights which would drive me mad if it stayed on all night, it makes an awful lot of noise, and also due to tough power bills, I turn it off whenever I leave for anywhere.

Laptop hibernates.
The PC is off 90% of the time cause I usually use my laptop. The Torrent/webserver(for developemental hosting) is on days at a time for the sheer fact that it has no kbd/mouse/monitor/fan, and my only reminder to turn it off is the small blue power LED.

Desktop: On all the time. Overnight it doubles my torrent box.
Laptop: Off when not in use, to preserve battery life. |

Mine desktop is on a fair bit of the time, but I use remote desktop to get on it when I'm in uni and stuff to work at things. Server is on quite a bit of the time, but thinking of turning it off the majority of the time to save a bit of electric...
Laptop is on when I'm using it, and either sleeping or shut down when I'm not, unless its only for 10 mins...

Try to turn it off but last month no shut downs or even a restart. All for seeding torrents.

I very rarely ever turned off my iMac, I usually put it to sleep unless I have a torrent running, in which case I leave it on. I do however turn off my MacBook Pro after I use it.

It goes into hibernate when I close the lid at night. Other than that It's always on. Occationally I'll shut it off over night if it starts feeling like it needs it for whatever reason.
