If it's just for storing stuff like films, TG eps. and the likes USB works fine, atleast for me...

True FAT32 is more compatible all the way around, but if you're going to be putting any files larger than 4GB (i.e. DVD isos) you'll HAVE to format it NTFS as FAT32 doesn't support files larger than 4GB. Most of the newer Linux distros can at least read NTFS anyway, if not write too.

I have a WD Mybook 320gig which you could get for about $95 for the Essential edition and $111 for the Premium (Premium edition has eSATA) on Newegg. It's small and nearly silent and generally gets favorable reviews. WD also makes a 500 gig Mybook for $140 on Newegg.

I too am looking at getting either the FreeAgent or the WD Book one from BB. But I really do not have 200 bucks to drop on these things and there is no markup for me to work with either. Are they 140 at any/most stores in the states? If they are I am crossing the border and picking myself up one.

MacOSX can't write ntfs, only fat32 and that isnt that good anymore. the mac filesystem (whatever it is called) can't be read by windows. So it's not that easy.images/smilies/wacko.gif

I have one of those FreeAgent Go Seagates and I love it. It's fast enough for me and fits my pocket, as I need to take it to different places. I also have one external USB 2.0 enclosure for PATA drives and I like it less then the FreeAgent, as it's not as fast and also not as compact and practical as the Seagate. This 500GB Pro model is surely a good deal, I'd go for it.

I picked it up today, it looks pretty neat...and I love the orange glow. I formatted it using Disk Utility to something called Mac OS Extended...It showed up as being Windows NT filesystem.

How well does Newegg work for people ordering in Canada?, and second would you guys recommend buying an internal and an enclosure or an external? (P.S. new one will be at least 1.5TB)

Need advice - my boss wants an external HDD that he can back up his hard drive on and carry around - I'm looking at this:

http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/pro...0091104&catid=

How durable would this be? Is it OK to carry something like this around in a laptop bag?

Yes, I'm quoting myself....are Beyond Micro's external hard drives any good? They seem to be more ruggedly constructed...need some advice ASAP pls....

Fucking office depot assholes! I paid $149 at Sams for the same one, and now office depot rolls out these savings. Darn. (office depot is down the road from me too, 2 miles max).

Personally, I don't trust Seagate. Too many bad experiences. For me it's WD all the way! I have a WD MyBook w/ USB2.0 & Firewire 400. For just watching videos off of it, I cant tell a difference between USB & Firewire, but when I'm transfering large amounts of data onto/off of it, Firewire 400 makes a BIG difference! Plus, the MyBook has the auto on/off feature that turns it on and off with your computer.

I've had three WD drives fail on me and they all start to whine before it happens. Seagate has a five year warranty, they back their shit up.

As for which manufacturer is best (seagate, wd, etc.) it is really a matter of personal opinion.
I will never buy a maxtor again because of the troubles I endured years ago. One of my friends couldn't get a SATA WD to work so he sold it to me and after a format it's been great for almost a year now. That and the other 5 WD drives I've bought over the years haven't given me problems at all, so they're my manufacturer of choice.
With the sheer number of HDDs that are produced its just luck whether or not you're going to get a bad example.

I've just bought a WD400KD SATA1 drive that I will be swapping with my older 200GB WD PATA drive that I will be slapping into this Thermaltake enclosure that supports both IDE and SATA and got decent reviews so I hope to be set for a while.

As with most tech products, there are a ton of options to choose from, and the only way to come out on top is to spend the time to research the options and decide what you need and can afford.

From what I've gleaned, your best bet is to buy a decent enclosure and an OEM hdd and install it yourself. People seem to have troubles with enclosures that already have hdds installed, mostly because the fancy "features" that are included with some external hdds (one touch backup, synchronization, etc.) usually end up breaking and becoming more of an annoyance than help. But it's really all about the luck of the draw.

If you've already bought the HDD you were talking baout ignore this, but check out this 320GB Iomega External Hdd. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822186047

I've had one for about a year and have never had problems with it at all. Just keep in mind that after formatting, the 320GB turns to 298GB. But hey, it has room for all my top gear episodes and ALOT more space beyond that
