iPod touch is a good way to go. If you're vehemently anti-iPod, then maybe a zune HD if the reviews are good.

Bah, touch.
![]() I'll keep my 80GB Classic ta', gets the job done perfectly. ![]() I mean, why bother having a touch screen when all you want to do is listen to music... I've used an iPod Touch and it was very impressive. But no easier to use than my Classic really. Although I guess people want the extra features... which you could have and more on a phone... although really a phone should be for making calls not reading the internet... thats what a net book is for... although a laptop would do the same job really... Bwwwaahhh, modern technology baffles me!!! ![]() ![]()

If all you want is music, then there's no need for a Touch. However, if you want web browsing, email, youtube, and 50,000+ apps then a Touch is a great investment. I use mine so much I couldn't possibly imagine living without it any more

Iphone?
![]() *runs* In all seriousness: I think its just itunes that people dont like. The player itself is fine. |

^ And I don't understand the dislike of iTunes. It's simple, pretty and does everything I want it to, plus more which I don't use. What's there not to like?
As for the OP's question - I have a 5th gen iPod, and it plays music just as well as a Touch, or any new/old iPod. The thing you get with an iPod is simplicity. A Touch is very useful and nice to use. The interface is indeed second to none, but if you are never going to use all the features or need a larger screen for videos (I think the Touch's screen is just big enough for videos, but don't bother with a classic), then just get a classic. As for the simplicity: every time I've used another player, I just get confused. But the first time I picked up an iPod I knew exactly what I was doing. Sorry to be of absolutely no use as to giving a best non-apple MP3 player, but I once hated them, then I bought one, and now I love them. |

It's good to see the Apple haters haven't found this thread yet.
![]() The iPod touch is really fantastic. When I bought one, I was a bit concerned that it would just be some novelty that would quickly wear off, but it is really fantastic and useful. It is a lot like buying a small netbook. It does everything; games, internet, email, social networking, taking files on the go (PDF reader built in!), etc. plus it is a highly intuitive music/multimedia player. You can't go wrong with one. |

I think the problem with iTunes was that it got rather sluggish, due to some added features. I think starting with 8.1 or so, they've fixed that problem. Other than that, i really depends on what your priorities are. In terms of web browsing and light gaming, the iPod Touch is ahrd to beat. Never really did used to care for Apple products, but the iPod Touch totally won me over. I absolutely love it and use it everyday ever since the day I've bought it.

iPod vs. alternatives? It depends on what you're looking for in a player. Just music playback, or video too? Internet capability? Capacity? Physical size?
Give us some more details on what you want and then we can help you better. If you're looking for a modest capacity, do-everything-with-one-device kind of thing just buy the Touch and be done with it. If you're looking for something smaller (4-8 GB) I'd suggest comparing a Nano with something from Sandisk or Creative. If you're thinking about a Shuffle (why?) get a Sansa Clip. Also, if FM radio is a must, anything iPod is right out (and many others for that matter). I used to be an iPod hater, but after having won an older one in a contest and having some experience with newer ones, they are a very capable player. That said, there are many other excellent players out there. Do some research and, if possible, try a few out before you buy. Last edited by 73GMCSprint; July 6th, 2009 at 3:24 AM. |

Not true. The touch is out, but Apple sells that FM radio remote thing for standard iPods.

Cowon D2 or iAudio 7 are excellent alternatives.
Or you could try and scout for something that can run rockbox.

Same here. I never really liked Apple stuff till I got the iPod Touch and fell in love with it. I think this is what Apple does best.

Don't care about web browsing - never too far from a computer, plus WiFi is not a blanket here like it is in say San Francisco. What is important to me is
1) Sound quality 2) Storage size 3) Flexibility as to which formats are supported i.e. FLAC 4) Battery life 5) Size 6) no artificial limitations 7) Not having to pay $10 for each upgrade of PC software.

Then what you want is the Sansa Fuze. Up to 8GB, MicroSD expansion up to an additional 32GB, FLAC support, top notch sound quality, small, inexpensive. It might be rockboxable, but I'm not sure. The only downside I've found for it is the use of a proprietary jack instead of a mini USB jack.
EDIT: If you're ok with used/refurbished, you might also want to look at the Creative Zen Vision:M. It's got a HDD in 30 and 60GB, but is pretty big and heavy.

Will I be able to plug into auxiliary output in a car (or are those iPod only?) Also are there any silly limitations to it?

Depends on the integration your car has, most of them only support iPod through the USB connection. Alternative is, if your car has an auxiliary input, plug a standard 3.5mm into the headphone jack and listen that way. You won't be able to use the radio controls, but it still works.

Many cars have USB connections and/or simple audio input - those you can use with any decent players. Some car makers offer specialized iPod connectivity, but I don't know if that means other players can't be plugged in. |
