I'm happy as long as it makes calls, receives messages, has an address book and big buttons. So really any phone works for me.

The more I see of Android the more I like it... it looks very nice and stable, especially for such an early release. It's already got some innovative features in the OS which I like.
But the G1 is so butt ugly... it's thick and without any kind of design. Still, if you can get it cheap on a contract it should be exciting to be a guinea pig for them. |

Can Android be installed on a windows mobile device? I'm getting the HTC Diamond soon and as much as I like the TouchFlo 3D interface, I wouldn't mind a dual boot with Android.

There's the one port from XDA-developers but I don't think it will come to WinMo as a reliable version anytime soon. Apparently you can't even get Linux on there.

I played with a G1 dummy the other day and I'm not really liking the hardware. The keyboard was very uncomfortable for me, and the sliding mechanism, while sturdy and such, just bothered me for some reason. Since it was a dummy I didn't get to see Android, but the hardware and lack of T-mo 3G in CT means no go for me. After that we went over to the AT&T store and one of the guys there happened to have a Fuze (HTC Touch Pro) that he let me play with a bit. I did enjoy that. I was afraid I wouldn't like the keyboard because of it's very small size, but it was actually very comfortable, and the Touchflo 3D interface was nice. Now I just need to get my grubby little hands on an X1.

So, my thoughts:
Pros: -Android OS. Does seem pretty stable. -All market apps are free until next year. And there are a TON of really neat, useful apps already! -Keyboard is easy to get used to. Slide mechanism seems solid and built to last. -Battery life is pretty decent, depending on how much you engage the GPS reciever or browse at 3G speeds. -Has that nice rubberized coating on the back of the phone. Comfortable, and doesnt show fingerprints. -I can use MP3s as ringtones. (Cant do that on iPhone, which is retarded.) Cons: -Still buggy in some places. For instance, this works on my phone still (havent recieved the FW update OTA yet.) http://android.jim.sh/index.php/ConsoleShell -A few more dropped calls than my MDA -After I got the phone, I went to Vegas a week later, and while there data connectivity wasn't spotty, it just flat didnt work 50% of the time. I believe this to be a network problem though, not a phone issue. -No stereo bluetooth yet -keyboard VERY awkward to use when something plugged into USB port -no regular headphone jack(!) For me, the pros definately outweigh the cons - and keeping in mind that the phone just came out, and how much the dev community is ALREADY embracing it, I feel I made the right choice. |

Android is definitely a good bit of software, but the G1 itself is hardly a svelt beauty. It just looks like a cheap and plasticy toy, rather than a serious iPhone competitor. I can't wait until they port Android to the EZX platform..

Well, all the functions arn't supported yet and you may get buttfucked if the OS crashes, so I would be careful.

It barely works. You can make a phone call, but not much else works. The Microsoft CEO guy Steve Palmer stated in a press conference that he considers Blackberry and the Iphone to be much bigger competitors to WM then Android is in its current state. Its still very much in development right now and won't become a truly viable solution for quite a while. That said, I look forward to when it does, as I think open source projects are awesome. Just not there yet.

I just picked up a G1 for my wife and got to say that I'm impressed. Android is very stable and quite slick. And now that the G1 has been out for awhile, it's really stable with the latest firmware and there is a strong dev community with a ton of nice apps. The nice part is that you can get almost all the apps for free, where you would have to pay for the same app on the iPhone.
It's not nearly as ugly pics make it look. Before she got it, I was thinking it was going to be big and clunky, but it's really not. It's actually more comfortable to hold compared to an iPhone, and I really prefer the keyboard instead of the on-screen iPhone keyboard. It's nice having the extra buttons along the bottom (especially the back button).

Apparently a much less chunky model called G2 will be coming out soonish, but it is sans keyboard. How's Android's on-screen keyboard?

Yeah, it's rumored that the G2 will be out in May.
I don't think the G1 has an on-screen keyboard (at least I haven't seen the option for it). Personally I like having the full QWERTY keyboard, but of course it means the phone isn't as slim, but the G1 really isn't that thick (0.63 inches vs. an iPhone's 0.48 inches). The trackball is nice too.
