ok so i'm trying to connect my hdtv to my pc, but the problem is that it's only a p4 2.4ghz 1gbram and geforce 6600 256mb system, so i need some kind of codec that can magically make 720p videos run almost smoothly. Is there such a thing ?

It should run fine, assuming they're rips, as opposed to in some kind of bluray codec.
My cold computer (AMD 3200+, 2gb ram, and 6600GT) played 4.5gb 720p movies perfectly. oh and btw it has nothing to do with the vid card (at least with vid cards that old), only with cpu. EDIT: only thing I had installed was VLC, and whatever codecs come with that.

Installing CoreAVC should do the trick. It's the fastest AVC/H.264 decoder.

unless your computer has hdmi out (which it doesn't if its a 6600), no. HDMI carries DVI video + it's own proprietary type of sound. Though dvi will output compatible video there is nothing that will output compatible sound, except for hdmi itself. just use a 3.5mm --> RCA cable.. the tv is only stereo anyway.
