Any one knows a thing or two about them? Like, could they be a fraud? :s
www.hddunlock.com I have a few laptop HDDs that are password locked by the customers somehow and were suggested as failed HDDs, paperweights... since they don't know or remember the passwords.. I'd like to unlock them.. if any one can give the website a look.. whats hitting me is that they've only got 'PayPal' as a payment option, or am I missing something? :s Also note, they don't have any phone number mentioned on the website for the helpline.. just a 'contact us' form. duh. Thanks guys! Last edited by syncview; November 8th, 2009 at 7:06 PM. |

Exactly where is it password locked? In Windows? In the BIOS?

BIOS. laptop's CMOS password was cleared but the 'built-in HDD password' couldn't be..
Windows / bios in my PC detect it fine.. but no action can be performed on it so far, with almost any software. Last edited by syncview; November 8th, 2009 at 11:43 PM. |

How are the HDDs locked? With 3rd party software or other methods?

Most of the cases are like this: CMOS password was set and was forgotten somehow. Nothing else I've heard of. In some lappys you just get the CMOS password deleted / cleared somehow and you're done. IBM, HP, Toshiba and some others are a bitch when it comes to this. When the HDDs are put in the respective laptop from where they were taken out, even after the CMOS password is no longer there, a pop-up says during boot: "please enter the built-in HDD password:" and thats it.

But in most cases, resetting the BIOS/CMOS should clear all the passwords.

Nope, been there done that.. nothing works.
So far tried: WD's diagnostic tools to zero write, failed.. message: drive is locked any windows based s/w that low level formats or etc.. either doesn't detect the drive or gives an I/O error / or says that it cannot read some sectors or w/e at 00 thingy.. Hdd erase, dos booted again.. doesn't work. acronis.. partition magic.. .. windows disk management.. nothing works. Most of the people don't need the data back surprisingly. so they just ask if their money can be saved by unlocking the drive. no matter what happens to the data. This Toshiba lappy, same case.. CMOS pw was set and blah blah.. its of a client's daughter.. so data is not needed back (not necessary).. how true this story is, idk... |

Usually you can get the data back by replacing the circuit board on the hard drive. If you want the computer to work, just replace the hard drives.
