How do I make an index page in Word?

are you talking about an HTML index page?

or an index for a report or something like that?

First of all you have to work with headings.

Title 1 = heading 1
Title 1.1 = hearding 2
Title 1.1.1 = hearding 3

So Word knows what title is which level. And so, Word can see it is a title, and it numbers it automatically.

Then, when you are finished with your work: insert -> index or reference -> index

Yeah Jensked is right, it's real easy and when you finished the index you can control-click a chapter from the index and Word will take you there.

place your cursor where you want the index

press CTRL-F9
and a gray box with special braces (-->{}) will appear
in these braces, type TOC startpage endpage

place cursor out of box, and press F9
table of content will be build for you

(pagenumbering has to be enabled!)

by the way, when you edit your document, it's possible your index isn't up to date anymore.

Right click -> update or something
