Default How much is old PC equipment worth?

I know the market for used computers isn't very big, but when you're building a new one every bit of money you add to your budget helps. So I'm wondering if my old rig will be worth anything to someone on craigslist? It's 3 years old, but other than that runs fine.
  • Mobo: ASUS A8V Deluxe
  • Processor: AMD Athlon64 3500+ 2.2GHz w/OEM HSF
  • RAM: DDR PC3200 2x512mb
  • GFX: ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb
  • HDD: 120gb Seagate PATA 7200rpm
  • PSU: Zalman 400W super silent something
  • Case: Antec P160 silver
  • Fans: 2x120mm
  • Optical Drives: 8x LG DVD-RAM, 48x LG CD-RW
  • Monitor: BenQ 19" LCD 1280x1024
  • OS: Windows XP SP2, Vista Ultimate runs Aero crisply
  • Misc: Sapphire ATI 550 TV tuner, 5-in-1 flash card reader, old (but working fine) HP colour inkjet, 2 flat speakers and subwoofer, sound and ethernet are on-board.

I'm not picky or desperate for cash, I just honestly have no clue if this would be worth $30 or $300... TIA. images/smilies/biggrin.gif

I guess with the monitor you could get the 300$ but then I know nothing about the market, I give my stuff to a friend who then upgrades old pcs of his customers...

in my experience..... second hand computers an parts depreciate like stones sinking in a pond.

i had a rig that i'd ploughed over 2k into and after about 2 years (which included upgrades during that time) i think i got 400 tops for it and the various other parts.

heres what i think

CPU: i wouldnt give you more than 30 quid for it..... its not that quick, and its not dual core, dual and quad cores are where the game is now.

RAM: strangely enough, older DDR stuff is a little more pricey than DDR2 i think. however, i picked up 4GB of DDR2 from crucial for £75 shipped. they were SO-DIMMs as well. 1 gig of DDR? £10-15 tops

GPU: 9800pro was a classic card from the ATi domnance days.... it was the only choice if you wanted serious performance. now though that card is super long in the tooth. the gpu market moves at an immense pace and you can buy cards new that offer many times the performance of the 9800 for not much money. £15-£20

HDD: the tech is more static, a HDD is a HDD, 120gb isnt very big tho. £10

PSU: £10-15

CASE: great choice here IMO, i had one for my rig, its a beautiful case. if its in good nick you could get a good £40 odd for it i reckon if you bundle the fans with it

DRIVES: drives are drives....i'd just recycle them and use them again. honestly you can pick up a name brand DVD writer for £20 give or take OEM. it doesnt make sense to try sell them 2nd hand.

MONITOR: good size, and a decent rez especially for gaming since its not too demanding. however.. the odd 5:4 ratio is out and 16:9/16:10 is in, people are affter the Wide Screens these days so i think youd get less ££ than you want for it.

TV tuner is a good addtion and if you like it and it works well..why not just keep it? rest of the MISC stuff isnt worth much at all. couple of quid.

i had the following machine

3200 A64 clocked to 2.5
2 gig of ram
x1900xt
200gig hard disk space
audigy 2
antec p160
seasonic S12 500w silent psu
17inch iiyama monitor
logitech z3 2.1's

it was a good machine and honestly i got about £450 from selling it. i sold the graphics seperately on ebay and flogged a gig of ram and the PSU to a mate. i bought a slower GPU and a smaller PSU to replace them and then sold it to my dad for £300.

so yeah, its not worth much..... but as you say..... any money towards a new build is worth it.

^ Thanks for the detailed info, I didn't figure any of it was worth much. I just wanted to have a ballpark figure for when/if I list it online.

Even out of the stuff I listed, I might decide to keep the PSU for the new computer and the LCD to use with my laptop.

I don't know for the rest of the stuff, but consider yourself lucky if you can get $100 US for that monitor. I was able to sell my 17" (same resolution as yours) for $80 on CL recently.

^ Man, computer shit has become so cheap. I saw some sweet 22" widescreens for $299 yesterday. I wouldn't pay much for a used 19" either.

I'm probably gonna keep my LCD, it's pretty sweet and slim. I might as well keep it to use with my laptop... the laptop has a 15.4" but 19" make a big difference.

Maybe what I'll end up doing is just list them all under one post on CL and offer to sell as a package or separate and just let them go for however little people will offer. I mean it's either a few bucks in my pocket or a lot of useless junk in my storage room.

Your best bet might be to find someone locally who needs a computer for general use, and then sell it to them for maybe $300 (if you are lucky). There are so many cheap PCs on ebay, etc., I'm guessing it would be harder to get a whole lot for it online.

Jeffy, that's a good idea and it had occured to me as well. I'm gonna see if any family friends need a computer. It's not great for new games but it's a very speedy for general use and is super quiet.

I remember paying over $300 for 32 megabytes of ram.
Also purchased a 10 megabyte harddrive for several hundred $ nearly 20 years ago now. It was roughly the size of a house brick and required its own external power supply, also brick size.

^ You don't have to go that far back. I bought the same type of RAM that otispunkmeyer bought for the same computer (Apple MBP) but it cost me over $300 just because it was 2 years ago.

^ Yeah, I noticed that. I just meant you don't have to go back to 1994 to see how much computer parts have come down in price.

As was said above, the best way to get rid of your old PC is to either sell it for really cheap or donate to a friend/family member.
