I have some old VHS tapes that I'd like to convert/transfer to my PC and encode into a DVD, DiVX, etc depending on content... Basically I'd like to know what options are available and the pros/cons with each setup.
My ideal/dream setup would be to buy a Set Top Box with the following features: - Hi-Definition Dual Tuner (Picture in Picture Support), Programmable Timer for recording TV to HDD. - Scart input/s for VCR/DVD player/s to record onto HDD (Macrovision Free). - HDD with enough space for at the "very" least a minimum of 4 hours recording time in Hi-Definition TV/VCR/DVD which Encodes into High-Quality files that can be read/transfered into PC, Once on PC HDD I can decide whether to convert/save as DiVX etc and/or burn to DVD. - Output from Set Top Box (HDD) like FireWire or similar that is detected by PC (Macrovision Free), I don't mind buying software if needed. Does such a Set Top Box exist? And if not I don't mind waiting if there's something like this coming out within 6-9 months. I don't have a great deal of VHS tapes (under 15) so I'd like to steer clear of any VHS/DVD-R combo as I'd rather spend more $$$ and buy something for the long term... Also, I wont be taking up video editing as such any time soon so I'd like to steer clear of capture cards "if" possible. Thanks in Advance.

mmm, why not just buy a leadtek PCI digital tuner? http://www.leadtek.com.tw/eng/tv_tun...&pronameid=252
they have video and audio capture through rca and 3.5mm audio jack which is suitable for VHS. The software will allow prog recording on multi channel. no limit recording (at least hdd size anyway) save you alot of money and stuff'n around? If you have a decent tv you should be able to connect it to your videocard and turn your pc into a media center, kinda hope this helps |

I can do this through my wife's Panasonic digital video camera.
