Default How to upgrade Tivo HDD

I found this tutorial and it looks involving but doable - http://tivo.upgrade-instructions.com/index.php

Have any of you successfully upgraded the HDD in your Tivo?

I've wanted to, but I think I'll either hold off until I get a newer one for HD (and can hence upgrade the old with minimal consequences if I blow it) or just never do it.

I've switched the HDD in my DirecTiVo using one of those instructions (forget what). The original drive began to sound like a grinder (the thing was like 7 yro). It was relatively smooth given that I'm a total linux newb. I opted to just replace the drive and mirror all existing content. Put the old drive away in case s***.

I did it last night, worked flawlessly! I replaced my friend's 40GB model with a 250GB Seagate drive ($53 shipped from www.frys.com). Copying the data from the old drive to the new one took about five hours, I really didn't expect it to take so long.

Yea if you want to preserve all existing recordings it takes a bitch of a time to make the transfer. I think mine took right about that same amount of time as well.

Yeah, I've done it to two Tivos, and it worked flawlessly both times. It's really easy to do, and if you decide to use dual drives, weaknees.com has a kit that provides a bracket and mounting hardware (along with printed instructions I think).
