Yeah, pre-ordered it a few days ago off Amazon + 1 day shipping. images/smilies/lol.gif

Also picked up a Maxtor 250 GB SATA HD for $160. That's going in my new computer once I build it. 8)

Sweet, how much memory do you have in your computer?
They had an article in PC Gamer stating that you need at least 512MB (I think) to run Doom 3 well.
It also said that there isn't a PC / GFX card powerful enough yet to run Doom 3 on ultra high detail yet images/smilies/eek.gif .

I ordered a copy off of Amazon as well (no 1 day shipping though images/smilies/sad.gif ).

In the mean time, I dusted off my 3D glasses (http://www.edimensional.com/products/edwired.htm) and decided to play Jedi Knight again.

Well, I was just going to use this computer which is a P4 2.4 GHz, 768 MB DDR, etc., but I decided to just buy a new one. Here's the specs & NewEgg links:
TOTAL: $1495.98
(It's gonna be a little cheaper than that for me as my dad is buying this computer off me and my sister is buying this monitor and speakers off me. Probably gonna cost me around $1000.00.)

Ow... Oh well, it'll be worth it. 8)

Nice selection and pretty competitive prices (perhaps a tad pricey on the memory).

I wonder how many people are spending money on new hardware in anticipation of Doom3.

I hope I can meet the game's requirement by just upgrading to a overclocked AMD mobile 2500+ and a 9800 Pro. This way I just have to spend around 400 dollars Canadian.

I'm gonna see how it'll run on my P4 1.8 with 1GB of DDR266 memory and a Geforce 4 TI4400.
I suspect it'll still do ok at 1024x768.

My current system is close to 2.5 years old, and $1250 was a prettry good deal at the time, especially considering it still plays most current games at high or max detail level at close to 30fps on 1024x768 (without any overclocking).
In a couple years or so, I'll buy a new system, and hopefully then I can re-play Doom 3 on the "ultra-high" detail setting images/smilies/mrgreen.gif .

You guys might want to have a look at this:

http://www2.hardocp.com/article.html?art=NjQ0

According to that my system will only be able to run it at about 800x600 and medium detail images/smilies/sad.gif

Nice article (and I'm still reading it), but why did they have the quality comparison screen shots in different resolutions?
They have the low and medium in 640x480 and the high in 800x600.
Well of course it's gonna look better in 800x600, duh!
Medium doesn't look bad at all though!

Don't about the fastest processor speed, but you don't need a Centrino. Just use a laptop with a mobile P4 and Athlon processor, and buy a wi-fi card...it's better IMO.

I don't know if you played the original Doom as a kid or not, but I suspect that younger people that perhaps "started out" with Doom as their first game, or started with newer games after that, might not have as much of a sentimental reaction to the Doom game as the "older" gaming crowd.
The "older" gamers (like me) played years and years of "non-3d" games, and when games like Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, DukeNukem 3D, Blake Stone, Rise of The Triads and such came along, they fully realized the significance of things, hence the (for a lack of a better word) "emotional" tie.

I still remember when Doom came out, a couple of pals and me got together for my first LAN tournament.
Sure you take it for granted now, but back then it was all oooh and aaah!
To put it in perspective, my friends were laughing at me because I was using a mouse.
"Why would you want to play with a mouse? Use the keyboard!" they said.
They soon found out though images/smilies/mrgreen.gif .
Anyways at that same party I saw an early demo of Dark Forces.
You could look up and down in this game, and you can have maps that have rooms that are above and below each other!
Again with the oooh's and the aaah's!

Personally I think that although Quake was a great game and a great advancement, I thought it lacked something that Doom had an abundance of: atmosphere.
I suspect that the use of 3D cards and higher resolution pronounced that problem a bit more.
Compared to the messy, blurry lower resolutions that seemed to almost leave things to the imagination a bit, the clean and 'pristene" graphics of Quake felt a bit "cold". images/smilies/wacko.gif
I think ID has realized this and I hope that there will be plenty of "atmosphere" in Doom 3. images/smilies/smile.gif

Ok, now where's my rocking chair, and where did I leave my cane? images/smilies/lol.gif

As for racing games, I'm a big fan, but unfortunately, the good racing games are few and far inbetween and the really great ones are even more rare.
