Default I Have a Bit of a Problem

Yesterday I copied a picture from the internet and put it into Microsoft Word. I then wanted to make that picture a file on my desktop so I copied and pasted it onto my desktop. Then it said something about saving it to some clipboard and I pressed OK. Then the screen flickered for a second and the quality of my wallpaper deteriorated a bit and the names of my desktop icons (which had a clear background) now have a dark blue background. Also, I tried to open a notebook file and the bar shows on the task bar, but I cannot maximize it (I just keep clicking on it and it doesn't show). This is the only type of file affected so far.

This isn't very urgent, but I would like to get rid of this problem.

Thanks.

Actually I have XP.

Edit: I just found that the system calculator doesn't show and the VLC player doesn't work when I maximize it (only works in small-window mode).

hmm, the picture may have borked up your display properties.

Open up your display properties (right click on the desktop and go to properties).
Click on the "settings" tab (farthest to the right).
Check your system resolution and color quality.

If the image was a .gif or something it may have set the color quality to a lower setting (should be at 32bit "highest").

The blue color behind your icons might be because your desktop color got changed to blue.
In your display settings, click on the desktop tab and check what the "color" is set to in the bottom right corner of the window (just above the apply button).

It's odd that VLC and notepad won't open anymore. Have you tried restarting?

Pasting the image to your desktop saves the image in a temp folder. You're better off saving the file to some directory (C:\whatever) and the using the browse button in the desktop tab in your display settings and selecting it there.

Edit: If all else fails, you can use system restore to go back to a day before your desktop got borked.
Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore.
Or, if it's REALLY broken, you can do as Buba said and reformat/reinstall, but you should be able to fix the issue without having to resort to such drastic measures.

The colour is already set to 32-bit.

The icon names' backgrounds just change to any other colour I select.

I'll just do a system restore and see what happens.

Thanks anyway.

Edit: Ok, I did a system restore to yesterday (before this happened) and all is well. images/smilies/thumbsup.gif

At first I would say it was an OLE issue, but if it broke apps as well I'd suspect a virus. Install a decent virus scanner this time. I suggest AVG.
