Default I hear nothing!

Since it seems quite difficult to reinstall windows on my pos pc, I'll just try to eliminate the problems one by one..

The biggest, which happened about a week ago while I was trying to figure out why this pesky bluescreen kept creeping up on me every night, is my loss of audio, it has gone mute. The little speaker on the task bar is gone, when I try to play a mp3 this message pops up:

http://img34.picoodle.com/img/img34/4/5/29/f_Image2m_82664c0.jpg

I do not know if it is related but for some reason my device manager went blank at about the same time...
http://img34.picoodle.com/img/img34/4/5/29/f_Image1m_8c5e837.jpg

please FG, help me...images/smilies/cry.gif

nope.

it's not your pc thats screwed, its windows/parition.. its corrupted (read my last reply to your other thread)

when windows/parition is corrupted, all sort of strange things can happen. As a matter of fact, my machine's C partition is also corrupted, I can't alt + tab or use any removable drives for longer than 5min.

Only solution is to do a clean format.

Am I the only one who thought of Schultz when reading the thread title?

Yeah well... we are on the same boat

Except for my problem isn't that serious, only one improper shutdown, but it did somehow mess up the partition. Now I'm some programs refuse to open, some lost all the settings.

Argh...

Just a little update; Since I am still waiting for my new pc I decided to format this one a couple of days ago since that seemed to be the only solution.

The hd has 3 partitions, the OS is on C:, then D and E are full of personal stuff and movies etc, since all my external drives are full and I didn't have the willpower to burn the stuff on D and E I just formatted C and did a fresh install (I was able to find the dell recovery OS install cd, so it found the sata partitions).

Anyway...

With the fresh install all the problems seemed to be gone, the sound was back etc. Then yesterday, while I was listening to some mp3's it suddenly went quiet again, the problem was back, just like that out of nowhere...

Since my new pc should be here in a few days its not a biggie, but do you think the problem came back because I didn't delete all the partitions and made one fresh new partition?

When I get the new machine I want to wipe this HD clean and put it in the new one, 250GB is a shame to waste after all, but if it will mess up the new system it goes in the bin...

You're sure you don't use some bad driver?

Since you're buying a new pc anyway, you might think about using this one for something else (Windows Home Server, some Linux distro, ...)

Do you mean the sound driver? I use the original soundblaster cd that came with the pc when it was new.

I do get an "error" in the device manager though, but it is not the soundblaster card.

As long as you wipe the Windows install you won't have an issue with installing your old hard drive in your new computer (Windows will use any swap file it finds and this can create issues).

As for the sound issue, check to see if you have two sound cards (an integrated one and an external one - easy way to check is to see if you have two sets of audio ports on the back of your computer, one attached to an add-on card the other to the motherboard) if so you will need to disable one - go into the bios and see if there is a setting to disable the integrated one.

LOL I hate going into the BIOS and changing stuff, I am always afraid that my bad luck will ruin everything. Usually though, it solves everything images/smilies/tongue.gif
