Default Is there a way to rip the audio track from an avi file without re-encoding?

Is there a way to rip the audio track from an avi file without re-encoding? I just want to rip the entire audio track out without loss of quality. Is there any programs that can do this? Thanks.

If you can save it to a .wav file, that would be lossless.

I've never had to do this, but just did a google seach for "avi audio wav" and that turned up some software choices that would do it, so take your pick images/smilies/smile.gif

I've recently found a much easier way of doing this, using Audacity.

just set the input as stereo mix, and hit record. I haven't noticed any loss in quality, you can adjust the quality to match that of the video, and save it as an MP3.

There's a much better way do this than saving it as a humongous wave file or re-compressing it to MP3: open the video in Avidemux, and select Audio->Save..., which directly rips the audio exactly as it was in the video (i.e. as MP3, AAC, AC-3, etc.) without conversion or re-compression. (Maybe TMPGEnc can do the same thing, I've just never used it before)

Thanks for the replies. I found a program called AoA audio extractor, it lets me rip the audio as a lossless .wav file, or compress it directly to mp3. So I'm just going to use it for now.

I use AoA and it seems to work very well. It had a minor problem with the last few seconds of a clip, but maybe it wasn't a very good FLV video and that's why it missed the end of the clip.

You could also just use virtualdub mod, open the avi, go to streams --> stream list, select the audio track, hit demux and type in the desired filename. Program's free, easy to use and useful for a lot more than just demuxing (as this process is called).

Yes, I've done this in the past. It works nicely for short clips.....but can be much slower since you have to record the audio in real-time (imagine if for some reason you wanted the audio from a 2 hour .avi).....and if you are multi-tasking, any other sounds from your PC will come through on the recording.

Vdubmod does a whole 90 minute clip (from a dvd rip) in a matter of seconds without losing any quality. Demuxing > recording

If you use VirtualDub, set the audio to direct stream copy from the audio menu and then select save wav from the file menu. Once it is saved just change the extension from wav to what ever the original compression format was.

The Avidemux tip given above also works and in pretty much the same fashion.

Thanks for the suggestions, I used Vdubmod some time ago to do some video encoding, I find it kinda hard to use, but I'll give it another try.
