Default Laptop is broke, again

Laptop was running like crap, since I recently completely restored it and didn't have anything on there worth keeping I thought I could use the system recovery disk and get it back to OEM spec. I put the disk in, it deleted all the data and once it started to write the stuff back on it gave me an error message and that I must restart my computer and try again. I did that, same error message. Restarted again and now nothing happens, just a blank screen that says NTLDR Missing Press ctrl alt delte to restart

I looked around a bit and found that it has something to do with the BIOS. I got the updated BIOS from Toshiba, burned it to a cd, and still nothing. Is there a better way to go about this? (besides purchasing a new laptop images/smilies/rolleyes.gif)

It's trying to load Windows, but it can't, so you'll need to try to restore it once more. Do you have a restore disc or is there a hidden restore partition on the HDD?

See, this is why I hate restore discs vs. just straight up OEM windows.

See if you know anyone with a spare windows license with an install cd. Install windows like that. It is guaranteed to work, with the catch being that you must know someone with spare windows lying around.

Or you could buy a copy of it. Or go to the store who sold you the computer and tell them the restore disc is borked.

I've had this problem before. If you can get the drive in an external enclosure connected to another PC, just copy the NLTDR file from another system to the root of the system partition on your hard drive.

Hmmm...you could boot to a Linux LiveCD that supports writing to NTFS, get the file from someone else's PC (networked, or on an external USB drive) and copy the file onto your hard drive.

I tried putting the BIOS on my USB drive and I couldn't access it, is there a certain way to get into it?

If your BIOS was at fault, you'd likely not be booting up at all.

What kind of Windows install disc do you have? What exactly happens when you start installing? Give more info images/smilies/tongue.gif

The laptop is trying to boot from the primary HDD, but since the boot sector/Windows installation is corrupted, it displays that message. You need to change the boot sequence so that the optical drive boots first. On some laptops, you'll need to change this either in the BIOS or press F10 upon bootup.

Its XP Professional. I press the power button, the Toshiba screen pops up for a second then I get "NTLDR not found."
