Linux gamers and mac gamers have a lot in common, they used to be gamers or bought a console and said to hell with a game that needs hardware not out for 2 more years to keep up with a 2 year console.

/me raises the ex-gamer flag.

I still play the occasional game of Civ IV (which runs great under Wine) or FreeCiv, (which is an opensource clone of CIV), load up a SNES emulator for some FFIV or Chrono Trigger action, or boot XP and play Bioshock, but I wouldn't have all linux machines and no consoles if I were still a serious gamer.

I am hoping you tech savvy folks can help me make a decision by offering more details on the installation of Leopard on a PC, why it matters if it is AMD or Intel based?

FYI, I am not into computer gaming much at all so this is not an issue between the OS platforms. If you were building a PC would you build it with an Intel chip and run MacOS or would you build it with any processor you wanted and run Vista? Just looking for opinions and suggestions with their reasoning as to why you would choose one over the other.

To be honest, I have no issues with Windows or Vista, just kind of bored with it if that makes any sense.
They share the same instruction sets. I don't see any reason why not.

Ubuntu is one of several linux distributions. Ubuntu is probably the most user friendly, but any of the dostros with enough tweaking can be made to behave like any other. (ie. they all have the same kernel, libs and programs, but some offer different config tools, etc.)

Then there are the BSDs (Open, Free and Net) which might be harder in general.

Then there is OpenSolaris. So pretty much every alternative is a modern Unix-clone.

I use Ubuntu; it is user friendly but I also use it for work (Systems Programming, I'm a CS major in college). I have a copy of Windows XP for legacy apps.

In summary: if you're new to linux, try ubuntu or fedora. Don't do something like installing gentoo or slackware on the get go.

Addendum: DX10 (and Direct X in General) is Microsoft OS only. The others do not have it, since MS only writes it for Windows. So they use OpenGL instead.
Most any modern operating system supports 4GB + of RAM (Linux, OpenSolaris and the BSDs come in 64 bit variants).

the basic instruction sets are the same, but there are still significant differences. If you go look for various torrents of OSX you'll find AMD specific versions of releases/kernels. Intels may support certain instructions that AMD's don't or vice-versa. I tried installing an intel version on a friends AMD system and it was slower a 90lb woman pushing a 1959 Cadillac up a steep hill in San Francisco.

The main problem stems from chipset support, Mac's run on intels and (almost?) all run on intel chipsets which makes support for amd parts even more reduced.
