Default MPEG to AVI

Sorry if this has already been repeated elsewhere, I did a search but didn't find anything.

Can anyone recommend a free program which can convert from MPEG to AVI? I've found a few that'll do AVI>MPEG but not the other way round. Any recommendations?

1. Why would you want to?
2. AVI is a container format, which can contain a number of compression types (XVID, DIVX, etc...).

This site should be able to get you an answer:
http://www.videohelp.com/convert

For MPEG to AVI:

I have a MPEG file which I burnt to DVD, but the quality was really rubbish, hence I'm trying to convert to AVI, so that I can then burn to DVD. Cheers for that link, I think I'll find the answers I need there images/smilies/smile.gif

time to break out WinAVI again i think. this is what i would use. it's free if you know where to look. it will do what you want, and allows you to choose the codec you want images/smilies/smile.gif

If the original MPEG file looks bad, then it's not going to look any better by converting it to AVI.
In fact it'll look worse since every time you convert from one format to another, you'll lose quality.

If that's the case, then that's a real bugger. I recorded the American episode via my USB Freeview DVB onto my PC, which saved it in MPEG format. When I play it in Windows Media Player/VLC/WinDVD the quality is rubbish, but when I play it in the Freeview DVB's own player it plays fine. I thought converting it to AVI might fix it, but now I'm not so sure images/smilies/think.gif

If the quality is not there, nothing you can do will improve it (SL 63 all over again? images/smilies/biggrin.gif)

Why don't you just download it from the torrent? VUK's quality AVIs are perfect.

2 reasons:

- I could get the video converted and burnt to DVD in half the time it takes me to download it

- If I record anything in the future, I'll probably need to try and figure this out, so I might as well try and make it work now

recently i converted a file to a smaller size, and the soundlevel of the new file were higher than the (to low) volume of the vid to begin with

A higher sound volume, while beneficial, is in the technical sense not a quality improvement.
Also, ANY time you re-encode, you lose quality (unless you use a lossless codec).
Of course, as with most things, it's a matter of degree, and given enough quality of the original encode, the re-encode quality loss may be difficult or perhaps impossible to see.

Well, I gave it a shot with WinAVI and it works fine now, I've just burnt it onto DVD. The sound is a bit displaced from the image (i.e. you hears JC's voice then half a sec later his lips move, bit like a badly edited kung fu movie in English), but it's not a huge issue.

Big thanks to all who helped out with the links images/smilies/smile.gif
