Can any recommend a good higher-end router? I'm so tired of consumer level junk: I've had Linksys, Dlink, etc. and they all seem to fizzle out after awhile.
So I'm willing to spend a bit more, but not a fortune. The past routers I've bought have been in the $50 or less range, so maybe something in the $100 range, or higher? Definitely needs G wireless. I don't have any N devices, so G is plenty. I also have gigabit ports on one of my motherboards, so if I can get something to utilize that, it would probably be good. Thanks in advance

How about the Linksys business router lineup. Supposedly it is of much better quality and programming.

We're running with a nice little Netgear router at work and it's never coughed yet.

Can anyone recommend a specific model?
I can't afford a Cisco. The cheapest one at Newegg is $350 ![]() I'm looking at the more expensive Linksys models but the reviews don't look all that grand.... This D-Link doesn't look too bad for $119: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16833127158

Really the Entry Level Pro routers are crap for the home. I know, I have one. For our business we went with Watchguard Routers as they do bussiness only solutions and there VPN setup seem easy. And for business they are doing an ok job beside the fact that one of them has an habit to stall and need a reboot for no reason what so ever.
So I thought cool, I will get one for the home so I can VPN from home without having to load any software on my desktop and laptop. Bad idea. The router does not understand how to do port forwarding for things like BT, Xbox 360, and other media devices. On BT it just kills the network and dies a painful death. Also there is a fee for getting the updates per year which is just stupid for the home (and business really). If you want a killer home router with some extra power I would get a Linksys router and then flash it to DD-WRT. You dont know how many times I have been able to bring to life a dead Linksys with this firmware. And it gives you a lot more control on your router and is really powerful. Its what i use at home now and its great. And now if you dont want to mess with it setting up I hear that Buffalo Technology is releasing a router that is using it built in. You can read about it here: http://www.hexus.net/content/item.php?item=10277

I'm not sure what problem you see in "normal consumer" routers. Any old $50 802.11g router seems to just work pretty well. I used to use D-Links, but, after my first one gave out after a few years, I experienced nothing but problems with later models.
I personally like Netgear. The reserved DHCP addressing feature is great if you don't want to screw around with static IPs, but you still want to use features like port forwarding, etc. |

Try Netgear or Belkin, we have a netgear at home and a belkin in HK, both have worked flawlessly in the time we've had them

The best router as always is one you build yourself. 8)
I'm using IPCop a dedicated Linux Firewall distro that turns your pc into a firewall/router. It runs flawless on a embedded system like an Alix board (500mhz, 256mb ram, 3x lan, 5watt). It's a bit more pricey than a standard router (~200$ incl. mini-pci wlan card, case etc.) but much more powerful than any consumer router. here's mine

Hardly, had one, threw it out after a month and replaced it with my current netgear one. If you want higher quality, you could look at 3Com, HP or Cisco. Anything cheaper is all the same consumer crap.

Oh please. Ever heard of hardware failure? As I said before, I have a linksys now (which used to work fine), but it seems to be fizzling out, and I haven't changed any of the settings in a loooong time.

I happened to have an old and dirt cheap 802.11b dlink router before and it was total rubbish, it would freeze if I try to transfer anything more than 50mb between computers and I needed to reboot it like 4 times a week and I swore I would never get another dlink product again. But....I was given a DGL4300, and it totally rewritten what I just said. It's simply the most reliable router I have ever used. If it wasn't because of firmware updates, my router would have been up for at least 1 year, no reboots. It handles heavy traffic with ease, I constantly transfer huge (4+gb) files on the gigabit LAN between my 3 computers while downloading stuff/play games online/talk on skype and it never gave me any problem. The only thing I don't like is it runs a bit warmer than other routers.

Most of the consumer level stuff is basically the same hardware and software just with a different interface, routers that can be flashed to dd-wrt are quite good but that still has any hardware pitfalls.

It certainly has really good reviews at Newegg.
