Default Need a new Graphics Card - What should I get?

My new computer is just two months old and my 8800GT is dead. The store will give me a refund but not cash and let me take something else. The only thing is, they don't have any 8800GT cards in stock and won't have any for at least a week. So, I think I will take something else. I don't mind spending a bit more. What should I get?

To be honest, you might be best off going with onboard graphics for a week and then getting another 8800GT. If not, there are several cards that would suit you that are slightly better (8800GTX, ATi Radeon HD3870, and then you get stupid ones like the 9800GX2 and 3870X2) but I don't know exactly the kinds of prices they go for and my internet's going far too slowly to look it up.

9800GTX or 3870X2 are both better than the 8800GT, you might want to chip in some extra money for these top of the range performance cards.

But I'd rather wait for a week and settle with the 8800GT.

If you have the money, an 8800 GTS 512 is a perfect card. It's not expensive at all, it overclocks stupidly well (up to 8800 GTX standards) and is very scalable up to 22"/24" monitors. Beyond that there are the 98xx options, but are slightly more expensive for not-so-noticable gaines.

So really the important question is; what size monitor are you using, since different cards do well on different resolutions.

They have the 8800 GTS 512 so I think I will get that.

Stick to a 8800 series, but it may be worth going for a higher end one if you have a big monitor and want to play like Crysis at 1080p (I have to run 1680x1050 to get a decent FPS).

I have a 22 inch lcd at 1680x1650. I think I'll go for the 8800GTS 512 or the 8800GTX the 9000 series seems like crap.

Upgrade to the 8800GTS 512mb, it's the best balance between price and performance. The 8800GTX is only slightly faster, but it's on 80nm tech so it runs hotter. The 9600GT is slower than your 8800GT, and the 9800GTX is just an oc'd 8800GTS. So the 8800GTS 512mb is the way to go.

I got a 9800GTX from eVGA for $309... that's $70 under retail if I recall correctly.

Everyone on FinalGear told me the 9800GTX wasn't worth the price premium over the 8800GT, but the instant rebate made it worthwhile for me.

But if you can't get the 9800GTX on discount, then just go with onboard graphics until they have the 8800GT. From what I read when making my new PC, the 8800GT is still the best bang for the buck, unless you can get a better/newer card for a nice price.

How much is the GTS over the GT? The GT will run ANY game at basically max settings at 1680x1050.

8800 GT's are like $170 on Newegg BTW Shawn.

Argh, why do you peeps keep referring me to Newegg? Not only do they not ship to Canada, they're retarded and won't even accept non-US Visa/Mastercard so I can have it shipped to a relative's house.

I got all my parts already... just find it funny that everyone keeps referring me to Newegg. images/smilies/tongue.gif Luckily, Canada has NCIX which is a lot like Newegg.

With the 8800GTS you get 16 more shaders, so imo it's worth it.

Edit: Ok, maybe not for Canada. I found on NCIX a 8800GT 512mb costs $193 + $30 rebate. The cheapest 8800GTS 512mb is $274 + $30 rebate. The 8800GT is definitely a better deal.

^ But Solberg is not from Canada... only I'm from there and I don't need a video card. images/smilies/tongue.gif

NCIX's prices aren't as cheap as Newegg obviously, but pretty close, especially considering other goods would usually be a lot more expensive here.

Ok, this is what's happening right now.

All the 8800 GTS cards are gone.

Tomorrow i am going there and I can get a EVGA 9800GTX or a Twintech or Gigabyte 8800GT. What should I get?

The Cheapest one imo, you won't see a visible difference in those two if your a casual gamer.

Sure if your hardcore about your Rig get the 9800 but if you have to ask what to get you don't seem to be much into it.

Unless the price difference is minimal, stick to the 8800 IMO.

8800GT, if the price stays the same.

Or 9800GTX, if you can get a special deal.

It really depends on his CPU, if it's not a real fast one he might not even see a performance increase in the 9800GTX over the 8800GT becuase it might cause a bottleneck. I think I'd choose the 8800GT unless the the 9800GTX is on some super sale or something.
