need advice on a program.

can anyone recommend a green/portable encryption program where I can encrypt/hide folders/files on my external usb drive.

I will need to hide some files on my external drive before I leave on Monday.

I just had a look at the program, it seems like it creates an encrypted file, which kind of works like an iso file, and it only works if you know the password.

kind of nice, but I need to hide like 500gb of stuff, what is the fastest way of doing this?

who are you hiding it from, cos if it's just personal files i don't think someone is going to brute force your drive :p just think of something clever and also tick the hide file names so it pops up the pass entry before opening the rar

Well, if you had actually used the program I linked, you'd be done by now, so...

hiding it from the cunts at the airport, I got a bit of movies, mp3s and games that I'm gonna bring back.

Putting it in rar is just as ineffective truecrypt, both will take too long.

I just need to hide a folder and then it will be job done.

hm.. I read the tutorial page, the program needs to create a file before the encrpytion starts, I've already copied 500gb of stuff on the external drive, I don't have the time to copy another 500gb encryption file.

Well, if you think they're stupid enough not to find a folder marked as "hidden", just do that, like Blayde said. Anything more effective will take time.

That's what I'm gonna do, but I just want to make sure that I won't get cuffed if they do decide to check the HDD in my luggage.

As for my mp3s, I will copy them to my flashdrive and carry that with my in my pocket. I doubt they will want to check that..

Well, I don't think they are dumb enough to get fooled with a folder with hidden attritribute property.

What I need is a program like magic folder, where it allows you to hide a folder away, the only problem with Magic folder is, like many other similar programs, you have to install it in order for it to work. I need a program where it can hide a folder on the fly without the need to install the actual program.

bleh... I'm leaving in less than 24 hours, I deleted all illegal stuff on my laptop, I'm over looking for a encryption.

As for the external drive, I'll just shove that in the luggage and hope they will never check it.

Just use fdisk (from linux probably) to change the filesystem type to something weird (like HPFS hidden). Unless they're really looking for something, it will look like an unformatted drive.

Edit: This info is completely wrong. I don't know what I was thinking. Please ignore me. On the other hand, I swear this used to work in DOS.

P.S. I am not a prude and swear like the rest. I thought there would have been a swear filter here? I am an admin on several forums and that word seems to be filtered out. I only filter out two words F* C*.

I usually stay away from forums that have a filter system, but to be honest, there is nothing wrong saying "fuck" or "cunts" to express your anger, as long as you use it appropriately.

Truecrypt is really the way to go...I tried it this weekend and it absolutely rocks! The only downside is that first you have to create the "file" or "partition" on the size you need. And according to your harddisk that requires freeying up some space first. But then it works like a charm.

That's what I said, but it seems like ppl havn't got that idea yet.

Anyway, 7 hours left before I leave, I'm not gonna worry about the HDD anymore.
