Howdie,
I'm currently looking for a foolproof method of storage along with a substantial amount of room. I'm looking at the Western Digital My Book World Edition II 2TB NAS, comes in at around €460. http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=339804 I basically want to sit it on my desk and plug the ethernet cable into my laptop or alternatively have it wired into my wireless router but I don't think my router would be fast enough to give decent speeds when working straight from the drive. I want to put all my photographs on it, have Lightroom catalog them there and have the ability to work on them instantaneously. Only worry is the Komplett page only lists it as being compatible with Winblows, I'm just assuming thats the software but would it be a pain to get it running on OSX without any native programs ? |

Cosworth Paddy, just got the 500 Gig version. Warning - I am getting an intractable problem with it, after a fairly short period of time (about 20 mins) of loading it up - I am in the process of getting everything over on to it. It fails with an error message (I am at work at the moment so can't give the exact message) indicating that my disc is full (which I know it is not) or I have no write access rights.
Now I am writing from a PC and I have this connected to a NETGEAR router. I have tried direct connection to an XP machine - same issue, I have reset the Drive using the reset procedure and reinstalled, I have tried writing from my Vista notebook all to no avail. I got one of the PC guys at work to have a delve on his technical web sites and he came up with that the drive is formatted possibly incorrectly for a PC - it is supposed to accept files from either a MAC or a PC, or the is a problem on the drive with a buffer of some kind filling up and not releasing its storage and overflowing. I went into PCWorld from where I bought it and they said to bring it in and they'd take a look, one thing when you first set it up it has a power save time out and it was suggested that this should be set to NEVER or the longest possible as this may be causing an issue. Hope that this helps - nice drive apart from that! The all white design suits a MAC. /EDIT There is a post here that may be of help - wish I'd read it before installing the Meio software. http://www.amazon.com/review/product...#RB88N1IKKTDP2 //EDIT OK home now - this is what I get following a load of some DVD type files - on this one I got only just over half of the DVD. ![]() Last edited by Cobol74; July 9th, 2008 at 08:07 AM. |

Seems to me, in the Mac universe right now, if you are looking for some redundant network storage that the Drobo (http://www.drobo.com) is the way to go. It's similar to RAID5 but you don't have to use the same size drives, and it's easy to increase your space if a drive gets full. The control software (on the Drobo) is proprietary, but can be recovered if there is a Drobo failure (just not as easily as a RAID recovery).
499 USD gets you the case, another 199 USD for the DroboShare (which is the network attached storage device controller), and then you have to buy the drives. So it'd be a bit more expensive than your current plan, but would work with no issues on the Mac, and easily upgradable as drives get larger. Sorry, doesn't help with your current suggestion, but throwing that out there. As for the Windows only software. If it is a network attached drive, it'll share it's resources using SAMBA at the very least. As long as it does that, you can access those shares in OSX. There should be no reason to have to run software on your machine to get it to work, except maybe for initial configuration. If your network is Gigabit, and you have a gigabit switch/router, it should be plenty fast to do with it what you want to. However, if there's a Firewire option, I'd probably use it with the Mac for your Lightroom work, because it'd probably be even faster. But I'm not sure not having direct experience.

Once I have money, I'll just be building a PC that will sit in a closet. All it will have is a cheap mobo, a good PSU, a horrible CPU, gigabit ethernet, and a shit ton of HDs in it.

I was going to suggest something like that. If you have an older computer you don't need anymore it's relatively inexpensive to convert it into a file server. The processor doesn't need to be very powerful at all. And you can be a lot more flexible with configuration than some hard-drive-in-a-box thing.

I've been doing that for years. I just recently ditched my old P3 for an Intel Atom system. It's a cheap low power 64bit CPU, which makes it a great ZFS filesever. The only problem I have had with it thus far is that the built in NIC isn't supported by FreeBSD, otherwise it has been great.

I'm halfway there, got an old PIII dual-Slot-A workstation with dual 600's and RAM to go with it, I'm going to throw it in an old case with a couple of 500's and plug it into my router and call it a day.

Why don't you do it properly and get a RAID5 PCI-Express card?
