I'm at 46C idle right now with my E6750, but my HSF is barely turning. It drops to like 30C if I kick my fans up.

That can't be right. My old Preshott 3.4GHz idles around 50C with the fan at 1800rpm.

my old p4 3.0ghz Prescott used to idle around 60c

The current core 2 65nm/45nm both run significantly cooler than the last gen of intel cpu

Yeah, sorry. Seems I can only get it down to 38C with my fans kicked up to decent levels (2.4k RPM). Under load with my fans up, it gets to 50C IIRC.

It was my old P4 3GHz that'd drop to 30C (or even 28C) when I had my fans up.

Northwood ran cooler than the Prescott. The lowest I've got my CPU was 42C, which is quite a feat for a Prescott without water-cooling. That was on a freezing cold day (in California) and my fan running at max. I have a Scythe Katana Cu.

I ran an Zalman on my old CPU (yeah, Northwood) and run a Zalman on my new one as well.

Is that the CNPS9700 LED? I just picked up four of those @ $20 each. Gotta love Fry's!

9500A LED (9700 was like $10 more and honestly is overkill). Newegg has the 9500's for $50 (which is below MSRP), but yeesh @ $20. Fry deals are nuts, but the closest Fry is an hour away and their non-sale prices are nothing to write home about.

Do you guys "kick up" the cpu fan via windows some how or just do it in bios by turning off the energy saving features?

I have a bunch of dials in one of my 5.25" bays.

Turning off the CPU energy saving feature in the BIOS is one solution. Another solution is to permanentaly fix the fan speed in the BIOS (if the motherboard is fancy enough to have that option)

Or you can get a fan controller and change the speed of the fan.

Or just get a fan controlling software that works through windows, but it might fuck up your fan. Like what my mate did to my old X800 card.... RivaTuner locked the fan up at 80%~100% and can not be turned down ever again images/smilies/mellow.gif

Not really. Controlling the fan speed is built right into the official drivers -- changing the fan speed is officially supported. images/smilies/wink.gif No hacking via weird methods = essentially no risk.

Fan controllers a bit too fancy to me.

Viper, when did you get so rich to afford fan controllers on top of your massive computer system!?!??!?! Is there a high demand for male gigalows in Portland?

It was $36. Hardly breaking the bank.
