Default New mp3 player, need opinions.

As it is very obvious from the title, i'm looking to buy a new mp3 player. I am not looking for anything extreme, just something that plays music (not interested in video or pictures) and is not too expensive (preferably 4-8GB). I will probably buy it from e-bay so i can't tell you a price, what i can tell you is not to exceed the 100$ mark. Any opinion either from personal experience or not is welcome. I was looking at the Microsoft Zune (i know it plays video and whatnot, i just don't care cause i liked it a lot).

Edit : Plz don't say i-pod. I am an anti-ipod

Samsung YP-T10. I bought one for my sister a while ago and in using for a while before giving it to her (just to load her music and, uh, "make sure it worked") and I quite liked it. Great sound quality, looks awesome, small, BT support, good battery life. Samsung has a couple similar models that might be a bit cheaper and better suit you, so definitely check Sammy out.

As a Zune owner myself I would normally recommend it like crazy but seeing as you live in an area where it isn't officially sold yet it might not be the best choice. Just ask Blayde.

Against my usual abhorrence of Sony products, I recently bought one of the NWZ-A726 MP3 Walkmans and it's excellent. It lacks some doodads like FM radio that I would never use anyway, but it's got excellent sound quality for a portable player and MP3 loading is drag-and-drop mass storage.

My brother got a Samsung YP-P2 4GB a little while ago. I tried it a bit and it sounds great.

I've heard good things about Cowon players.

That actually was my other choice. Same price tag as the Zune and i already had the Zen V Plus (the cheaper one) which was very good.

PS. I want to hear my kind of music at the gym and not the lame pophousetechnoelectronica shit they play!!! images/smilies/sad.gif

It's a bit of a gamble. If you have no problems with the device or software it would be a great device to have. But if something does happen you would pretty much be out of luck as far as support goes. At least that's my understanding on the subject and I could be mistaken. Blayde should give some more accurate information if he pops in here.

Overall Zunes are great devices and it's a real shame they're not very widespread. Rumors have it that the official European launch will happen in about a year.

epp_b i saw this samsung and it looks good. The only thing that concerns me is the touch screen. I don't know if it is a good thing or a bad thing for the purpose i want it.

KaJuN i haven't decided yet but Blayde contacted me and explained the problems. It all comes down to support (which i will certainly won't have at least for some time).
The only reason Zunes and other very good portable media players are not widespread is because if the i-pod mania that possessed the masses...

I've tinkered with a Zune very briefly and I quite liked it, but seeing as how it's not supported in your area, I have to go with the Samsungs as the first choice, then Creative. I had a Zen Vision: M and it was great, although chubby, and if you like to listen to your music in order by album, don't go with Creative; they don't do it.

I should probably replace my PSP with something a little smaller, but I have the feeling that the cheaper MP3 players won't be able to match the sound quality. I tried my friend's Creative Muvo a little while ago and that sounded awful. Fair enough it is a few years old, but so is the PSP now.

I guess anything by Apple is out of the question? I would actually recommend the Nano now there's a way of syncing through WMP11.

As I said, the Samsungs, or at least the YP-T10, sound great. I'm pretty sure they all have the same software for playback so they should all sound good. The ZVM sounded quite good too, but that may be a better quality player than the Muvo. Also, both of those players have (I think) 6 or 8 band equalizers as well as several presets.

As someone who's used a wide variety of players i'd recommend between the Zen (4/8) and the Samsung, my sister has the 8Gb Zen and it's a nice little thing, absolutely tiny but really good on battery and easy to use. The Samsung iirc is a bit more expensive, but also a good contender. Both have great features and it always comes down to ease of use. I sold an ipod in a week because i just couldn't get around it.

I haven't used the 4/8 Flash Zunes so i don't personally know, but if you use the player heavily i'd stay clear of anything without support, the only reason i got it was because i had access to support through someone in the US and it was cheaper than the local alternatives while being less expensive by miles.

My understanding from a number of sites i visited and read is that the sound quality is 65% earbuds and 35% software. Apart from that the thought of not having support for the Zune is quite unappealing so its out of the question. So i'm between the Creative Zen, Samsung YP-P2 and now the Cowon iAudio 7 which i read it is very good! The bad thing is that the Cowon is not so easy to find online as the other two. Damn...i can't seem to make my mind!

Well, if 4GB is enough, I'd recommend the K3 for a Samsung, smaller, slimmer, and cheaper than the P2, it doesn't have bluetooth, but if it's just for working out I imagine that's not a needed feature. Of course if it is then the T10 is the same thing just with BT added.

^^ the thing about the touch is it's not an 'ipod' per se, it's much more than just that. If he were to say he was anti-touch, that would be madness.
