Hopefully palm don't stuff this up and let it stagnate in the market like they have in the past.

The big news is that they've finally updated their dog-hack of an OS.

The only question is: how will they screw it up this time?

As much as I'm an Apple fanboy and user, I did love the many Palms I had and I must say this one looks damn good!!!

The only thing that concerns me is do we really need/want another OS in the mobile space? Hopefully it's a simple job porting from say Android.

Pre? Palm Pre... doesn't sound like a very good name.

Where does this fit into the whole spectrum? I didn't think with iPhone OS, Android and WinMo there was any room left, guess I was wrong.

Wireless charging sounds interesting though... I saw something on TV about wireless power like ten years ago, and that's the last I heard about it until now.

Well.. I don't want an iPhone because I don't want to look like this douche:
http://www.lifeclever.com/wp-content/uploads/2006/09/dress_mac_01.jpg

And I don't want Android because I don't trust a company who has a motto of "Do no evil" but seems to follow the rule of "Don't seen to be doing any evil"...

So yeah, i'll buy one!

You forgot the Blackberry OS and Nokia's Symbian. Palm has had an OS for phones longer then just about anyone too, as they were among the first to really do a good job combining a pocket PC type device with mobile phone technology. I think there is good potential for this to be a great device and should make for some more competition for the IMHO over rated Iphone. My only gripe with it is that there is a keyboard on the outside of the phone. My Palm Treo 650 had that, and would constantly activate itself and send random messages to friends and such.

As for why it has a keyboard and touchscreen, many (myself included) much prefer having actual keys to touch rather then some inaccurate touch screen keyboard. Its nice to have that tactile feel sometimes. Its the biggest reason why I waited for the ATT Fuze to come out and didn't go for an Iphone.

It worked out, because I really like the Fuze and all it has to offer in ease of development and customizability, while still staying within its warranty. Palm seems to support user development alot too, so thats a good thing when it comes to this new phone. Seems like a good step up from the Treo series and it should do well in the Business sector for sure.

The keyboard of the iPhone is a good virtual keyboard, but it is no way near as good as my old Nokia E61 so I understand why Palm would put a keyboard on the Pre. The sliding concept is good, you don't waste any screen size that way.

It's not through the air, rather, it's done by placing the device on a charging block they call the touchstone. There's probably some sort of large conductive panel on the rear of the device that allows it to take charge in a seemingly wireless fashion. Or it could work like the magnetic charging they used to power the EV1.

Because here in the U.S. the two main CDMA carriers (Sprint and Verizon) have had 3G for a while compared to the two competing GSM carriers (AT&T and T-Mobile). The CDMA networks here are better suited for a phone that is heavily dependent on fast data speeds. EVDO Rev. A is very quick and widely available.

On a different note, I laughed when Apple launched the first iPhone on the AT&T network (which hadn't really even rolled out their 3G network) and crippled the device with EDGE.

"Inductive Charging" is the principle at work here.
