Default Plasma TV

Well my mom was looking towards a plasma TV. And we were looking at one maybe high 30's to low 40 inches and probably under 2,000 USD. Some of the panasonic ones look pretty good but just lack the inputs that other TV's have. Any recommendations would be helpful. Thanks

lcd would be the best way to go.
  • - plasma is much heavier than lcd
  • - you can burn in an image using plasma
lcd prices are falling well. i'd check into the price of a lcd tv at the same size.[/list]

plasma's don't really have that burn in problem anymore. it can happen if you leave the same non moving image on the tv for a few days, but there are ways to fix that

costco is the best way to go...their return policy is great if you don't like it or have issues...
plasma's don't have the burn in issure anymore, that's like a 4-5 generations ago problem...if you set it up right, you'll have no problems...

and plasma's have a better image than lcd's do...

I did alot of reading into the plasma vs lcd

http://www.plasmatvbuyingguide.com/
http://www.lcdtvbuyingguide.com/

Simply put, I went nuts images/smilies/smile.gif Every newer model/technology for each kind of tv (plasma/lcd) fixed an issue that everyone recognizes with them.

EG: The burn-in problem with plasmas? Not anymore with the new models.

SO its very very hard to decide between them now, I would say read up on those links, and see what works with where you live/the kind of environment the tv will be in and ofcourse price. Good Luck images/smilies/thumbsup.gif

On the LCD vs. Plasma thing, my clear advice is: Go to a store and check them out. I personally prefer the image an LCD does over the Plasma, but a friend of mine sees it the other way round... Therefore I have an 37" LCD and he has a 42" Panasonic Plasma (the xxx-e500)
Don't know about your Prices, but a decent 42" Plasma is around 2500 Euros and way up, good 37" Plasmas start at 1600 Euros. The only 37" Plasma I know of is the Panasonic.
Some people will recommend you to go for the full HD thing, but I wouldn't, except you sit really close to the screen, like 1,5 meters.
Example: Your eyes can use a resolution of 1100x620 from a 2 meter distance on a 32" screen.
Plus: The full hd displays on sale in Europe at least cannot be mapped 1:1 via a computer, while the 1366x768 ones can. So they will look better and will be able to work with them better...

But since all this applies to the current situation in Europe, I really can't help you much...

cheak out this forum

http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=999451

Both HD DVD and Blue Ray disks are going to be in the resolution of 1080p (not 1080i) so to get the most out of them you need a tv that will do 1080p. The only Plasmas that do 1080p are fucking expensive.

1080i or 720p already looks that good, it will do just fine for the next 5 years, IMHO... All the players will output 1080i and 720p as well, since they are standards...

And I would heavily argue that you can't say as a rule that any technology has a better picture, as it depends on the person images/smilies/wink.gif

That new law in the US says that 1080i will only be available to people using TV's that have HDCP enabled, so check what your cable co. says and the TV's features.

1080p tv sets should come down in price pretty quickly in the next few years. Chinese and Taiwanese manafacturers are already putting tremendous downward pressure on the prices of current HDTV's.

are you planning on wall mounting it?

if not, i would go for a DLP - awesome picture, and far cheaper per diagonal inch than plasma or LCD.

(or, better yet, a projector - my brother in law has a 100" screen for $2000 images/smilies/thumbsup.gif

I believe you mean a LCD monitor rather than a CRT monitor, and i'm glad to see it works images/smilies/biggrin.gif . I am planning on giving the old home made projector project a go
