Default Poor General Performance when burning a CD

Whenever I burn a CD in my laptop, there is always a huge and quite unnecessary performance hit. Everything is jittery, jerky and laggy (eg.: moving mouse, typing on keyboard). It doesn't matter what burning software I use, it's done this with several different burning applications (Infra Recorder, Easy CD Burner, Deep Burner, etc.).

Seeing as this never happened in my old desktop, there is no reason why it should be happening on my newer, much faster laptop.

Any ideas?

Just a note: I have "Native SATA" disabled in my BIOS because at the time I installed Windows XP, I didn't have external media to place on access the SATA drivers from.

Ah, this is probably it: my optical drive is stuck in PIO mode. Now....to get it unstuck...

^ Yup, that was the problem. I fixed it by uninstalling the the Secondary IDE channel (to which the optical drive was connected) and the problems are gone.

As an added bonus, it also fixed this problem! images/smilies/smile.gif

Did you just uninstall the driver to the second IDE? Mine is also stuck in PIO mode.

^ Yes. When I rebooted, Windows automatically redetected and reinstalled the devices.

Found this while searching the Webz. http://users.bigpond.net.au/ninjaduc...duck/udma_fix/ Apparently, it's a wide spread problem, and this guy fixes it by configuring some registry files.

Well, I followed those instructions, and it worked...until I tried to read a CD. Every time I read any type of disc, Windows resets the device to PIO mode images/smilies/sad.gif

I think I may have a defective optical drive.

Did it do this prior to changing the registry files (when you uninstalled the driver)? If so, then you prolly do have a defective optical drive. images/smilies/dunno.gif

Right on. As I was reading the first post, I was thinking "Didn't he have issues with this optical drive before?" Glad to hear you got it worked out images/smilies/biggrin.gif

^ Not so fixed anymore images/smilies/sad.gif Every time I attempt to read another disc (doesn't matter what type of disc), explorer takes excessively long to load the contents, the optical drive is set back to PIO and errors are logged in the event viewer.

Five errors reporting The device, \Device\Ide\IdePort1, did not respond within the timeout period.

and the sixth: The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Ide\IdePort1.

I have tried:
  • Uninstalling the controller and rebooting (works until another CD is loaded, then reverts to PIO again)
  • The registry hack in watisdis's link (same as above)

I think I'll call HP tomorrow and get them to send me a new optical drive.

At least yours changes. I tried the registry hack and it didn't change anything! Maybe, i'll try uninstalling the controller, and if that fails, I'll have to break down and open my PC and swap the "slave"/"master" drives on the 80-conductor ATA cable position. images/smilies/censored.gif images/smilies/wallbash.gif http://img265.imageshack.us/img265/2348/animtechsupportfr0.gif

I had to use a fix tool for some error like that as well... Basically, once you get that message you posted 5 times, Windows decides to put the drive to PIO. Happened to me with a bad disc (not burnt, but original) although your problem sounds like the error is with the drive itself...

Well, this is interesting. I phoned HP support to ask for a new optical drive, and they're going to ship one. However, in order to give them the part number, I had to take my optical drive out. Now that I've reseated it, it appears to be working! (no more reverting to PIO mode!)

I think I'll put the shipment from HP on hold...
