Default Power Supply Recommendation

The fan on my Power Supply is clanking against the outer grating, and it's super annoying. I would just take the grating off, but there aren't any screws images/smilies/sad.gif I bought it about a year and a half ago and it looks like it's time for a replacement.

Any suggestions on an affordable power supply that is good quality, yet not too expensive? I guess it would be nice to get something for around $50. I shouldn't need anything higher than like 450W since I just have one video card.

Antec? Coolmaster? Thermaltake? or something else?

I'm never buying a Rosewill again!

I'll be shopping at Newegg images/smilies/wink.gif

Here's my specs in case they matter for your recommendation:

A64 3500+
ATI X800 GTO2 256MB GDDR3 PCI-E
1.5GB RAM
Seagate 300GB
Seagate 200GB
DVD-RW
CD-RW
Creative Audigy2

Thanks!

I highly recommend the Enermax Liberty, I use the 500w model in my rig and it does the job very well, and typically without being audible over anything else.

For your rig, the 400w model is fine. It's not a cheap entry PSU, it has Active PFC, modular cables, 120mm fan and really clever EMI shielding. As such, it's not exactly cheap at $80, but it is easily as powerful as other brands' 450-500w PSU, it's like insurance for your rig, spend a bit more to keep your rig safer. images/smilies/yes.gif

With that Rosewill, you probably understand the value of getting the best PSU for your rig. images/smilies/wink.gif

At this point, Im thinking either a Antec or Enermax. I'm going to keep checking them out, so any more suggestions are appreciated, for certain models and such images/smilies/wink.gif

280W??? I moved up to 350W in 2001 and that had a AMD 1800+ and a GeForce4.

It really depends on the efficiency of the power supply. Antec is really good, as is Fortron Source (even though they have the fan grating problem at about 9 months). I pretty much exclusively buy Antec TruePower power supplies. Both of my machines have 430 watt power supplies, which I do believe is a bit much (but I also have 4 or more hard drives in my two main machines, along with dual CD/DVD drives).

Don't use an Antec Smartpower. They suck.

However, Antec TruePowers are good. I'm running an Antec TruePower 550 with an Athlon64 3000+, Radeon 9800PRO and it's never given me any trouble.

Thanks for the suggestion on the Antec TruePower guys. I just might go with one. Only problem is newegg only has the 550W and I think that is overkill, but I can get a 430W from a company through pricegrabber.com for about $65 including shipping:
http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_t...sterid=7730823

Do you guys think this is the best power supply in the $65 range?

Or should I follow Vette Boss's advice and spend a bit more?

I'd probably say stick with the TruePower. I have only to had one fail on me (which Antec promptly replaced), and I've been using them for a couple of years, with no problems whatsoever.

http://www.antec.com/us/productDetails.php?ProdID=22430

Specs look good to me, single 120mm fan (quiet), dual 12V outputs (good for power-hungry graphics), 4 SATA connectors, PCI-e support...

Believe me man, there is no such thing as overkill when it comes to power supply's.

At best, it will run and you'll never have to deal with it.

At worst (by which I mean you bought one for $10) they would likely take out most of the other major electrical components of your system when they inevitably fail.

If you want a great PSU for cheap, the BFG 650 Watt is about as much power as you can get for $130. And it has a lifetime warranty. It's what I have in my box. It may sound like overkill, but if you intend to upgrade in the next few years, it's the way to go.

Power Supplies: I had two go on me and I lost a C drive. Back up, back up and back up! You can never have too much power, I'd reccommend 500 Watts at least.
