Default Problem with computer. Please help.

Periodically my computer freezes for a few seconds and makes the noise

"Bedop......Bedop-Bodup-Bedop"

It's getting very annoying and any help on getting rid of it would be much appreciated.

Do the sounds come from a speaker inside the computer, or from your external speakers?

Running Windows or Mac?

Does it freeze in any specific program (even just in Windows)? Or is it random?

Will really need a little more info before anyone can pinpoint the source of the problem...

Do you have any USB / Firewire devices attached to the machine? Also do you have a wireless card connected to it in some way.

There are no wireless devices.

I have my modem and speakers attached and thats all.

Iv asked a few of my friends but only one had ever came across a similar problem. He said it was because i was leaving disks in the drive. However despite having no disks it still happens.

Is it trying to render previews of video/picture files at the time? Or trying to access a network drive or other network item? These have both caused a number of 'freezing' symptoms on my machine.

Could also be your software firewall trying to do something (this was the case when I had Norton - damned firewalls...)

The Norton idea seems very possible. Ill delete it off my system (its expired anyway)

I seems to happen totally at random regardless of whether im playing a game or watching a video.

This may sound stupid.........but try upgrading the drivers. It's possible that either one of the drivers you're using now is corrupted, or it might be outdated. So look for newer versions (if available) on the computer's manufacturer's website, or if you're using a clone, then try looking on manufacturer website of that specific component (e.g., Sound Blaster sound card, look for the driver on their website). Hope this helps. Good luck!!
