Default problem with my PC

Lately, my computer has been acting weird. I'll just be typing away, and then, all of a sudden, it locks up, turns off and on, and when it does, it refuses to show an image on the monitor, and occasionally lets out an annoying beep. After I turn it off and leave it for a bit, it's is back to normal, ready to repeat. A knowledgeable friend says it's the power supply going south, and I just want some confirmation. What do you think it is?

Yeah, that sounds like your power supply dying and the rest of your comp overheating. Happened to me when I stuck a Voodoo3 card into my old HP pavilion way back when, and it only had a 100W power supply.

Perhaps the PSU is not dieing, but simply gets too hot. Take it out and blow compressed air through all the vents, this will clean out the dust and allow it to cool off again. If you've never cleaned the PSU before, all the components inside heat up cos of so much dust.

If the problem still occurs, then, it will be time for a new PSU.

^Yeah, my comp has a fair bit of dust in it. I'll see if I can find a can of compressed air and clean it out.

When mine locked up like that it turns out the capacitors on the motherboard were leaking.

Sounds like overheating, which means you either need better air circulation/venting or your comp is over exerting itself. As mentioned above, your power supply could be overworked which could explain the overheating to begin with.

before you take it apart it might be a good idea to get a system monitor running so you can monitor temp levels and power. ASUS PC probe II is very good images/smilies/smile.gif

Lockups are pretty tricky to troubleshoot. They can be caused by just about anything.

But, yes, start with the power supply. It couldn't hurt to run Memtest86+, either.
