Although the service launched on Monday without iPod support, Qtrax claims to have devised a way for its tracks to work on the Apple players, which have thus far been restricted to compatibility with DRM-free tracks of those wrapped in the Apple's proprietary FairPlay wrapper.

"We've had a technical breakthrough which enables us to put songs on an iPod without any interference from FairPlay," Allan Klepfisz, Qtrax's president and chief executive, told the Associated Press. Although the exec declined to give specifics on how Qtrax will make its audio files compatible with Apple devices, he noted that "Apple has nothing to do with it."

Thats why you get a program that removes DRM. I use my schools crappy subscription site but then tear the drm out. Works brilliantly.

Well, how about the analog hole? Can you legally record your computer's output if it's reading from legal sources?

I hate DRM as much as the next guy, but it's just a matter of media now, at least you can strip it off with certain programs. This could be pretty big for the mass majority of people who just want to listen to music.

More important is the issue of sound quality, if all the songs sound bad, people will stop downloading and the service will dry up. Nothing in the world will fix rubbish encoding with distortion and artifacts of over compression.

^ Read more about it, now I think the same. From what I read, this is basically a thinly veiled trap for P2P users. The program you download, scans your HDD and sends info to the RIAA.

Those services costs money though, if I'm going to pay for my media, I rather go to a store to buy the CD or DVD.
