well that's cool and all, but I also expect illegal (to do it while driving)
I can do the same with my portable satnav, I just choose not to images/smilies/tongue.gif

And yes, portability FTW. If I change car I never have to learn a new system, set up "home" again, or do all the setting up again.

That's what you'll tell the cop when it pulls you over? Solid excuse actually images/smilies/tongue.gif.

"Sir were you watching a video on that 5 inch TV screen?"
"Me? No! How could I see my map with a video playing!"

You obviously haven't seen the VW RNS-510.

Google it.

But it will still suck compared to anything Audi puts in its cars next. Like the new 3-D MMI with Nvidia chipset.

I do like the top right screenshot that has the 3D buildings etc, but if you buy a nice (not like my 100€ thingy) portable one you have have something similar aswell

And it'll still cost around 500€ instead of 2000€.

To me "built in looks nicer" is a good argument, were it not for the crazy price difference

I've only ever used built-in satnavs and only had one that was "slow". A lot of them offered here now seem to be HDD based. Not sure how you update, maybe through DVD drive or download.

I will say this, the ones I've used that had integrated audio and satnav were terrible. I can't stand having to press buttons all over the place to change radio stations and volume etc not to mention those bloody digital "beeps" everytime you do something. Give me a good old fashioned stereo with dials, separate from my satnav.

If you don't mind, can I ask a question in your thread?

Just wondering if its usually possible to use a satnav system on a different continent just by changing the DVD? Anyone know if the base language is fixed or can that be changed with a new DVD also? I would have thought that the units would be pretty much the same wherever you go, just with different software, but a dealer told me I wouldn't be able to use the satnav from here OS even with a new DVD.

My integrated nav has dial for the volume and the buttons are fairly massive on the touchscreen so you'd have to be fairly retarded to mess up pressing them.

It wasn't so much the size, it was that I had to press "audio" then the volume and every button pressed was a beep that we couldn't figure out how to turn off. I'm sure on anything mid-range and up its probably a lot better (wheel mounted controls) but my experience hasn't been good.

Just looking at your pic now, I think the last one I used was like a double din unit with all functions controlled through the touchscreen, to access the disc slot you have to tilt the display to get to it, yours is all separated.

Now I come to think of it, I think I used one with a dial once and even that beeped every time I changed the volume!

my mother has a real nice one in her '05 Lexus ES330 that I like. I think it was part of that mark levinson audio pkg but whatever, there is an actual volume knob on it, so no beeps and boops unless you wanted to adjust the positioning of the audio (fade, balance, bass treble, etc). and it had voice navigation from a steering wheel button and all that. Really well-done system. Nicely thought out, almost like they cared!

You wouldn't say that about the Bang & Olufsen system in the A8.

It's possible, but you have to edit the firmware, which is what all the Audi boys do when they wanted to use the EU RNS-E system in their US cars. The reason is the EU of course, got the damn systems first, were more of them on the market, therefore were cheaper than the US system. But the US DVD would not work in the EU unit, so they found a workaround. Not to mention the EU unit has the option of TMC and tv tuner.
