EvoWALO, we don't yet have HD over here in the UK, and we won't have it for at least another year if the government targets are met (but people are saying there won't be proper implimentation for at least the next few years... images/smilies/sad.gif ). However, the HD programs are going to be phased in - that is, the most popular programs will get it first. Now, whether that includes FG/TG I don't know, but I really hope it does.

Currently we have only got digital TV which is nowhere near HD in terms of resolution, but still better than analog. We also still have analog TV but that should be turned off complete by 2010 (again, 5 years ago the government was saying it'd be off by 2005, so who knows when it will be turned off and the next step fully implimented?!?).

As for BBC buying stuff for HD... not so sure about that, but wouldn't be too surprised... Can't wait for HD over here images/smilies/thumbsup.gif (though it would mean a new TV... images/smilies/sad.gif )

WTF, no more analog TV?! That'd mean that everyone would have to buy new equipment!

Man, I love how things are here. The government stays outta all that crap and free enterprise keeps things moving along. images/smilies/smile.gif

Correct, It's the same situation in Germany but the equipment needed for digital TV goes for 60 € so it's not that big of a deal.

Hey, if the British government had stayed out of TV we never would have had Top Gear! images/smilies/ohmy.gif

Over here, opinion is definately split as to whether having government control parts of TV (such as when the analog signal should be switched off) is a good thing or not... as well as BBC being paid by TV license and to some extent controlled by government. I like the current system, but hey, that's a discussion for a different thread and has been discussed many times elsewhere I'm sure...

But yeah, the switching off of the analog signal means that everyone has to buy new kit. The Digital TV receiver boxes are seriously dropping in price at the moment, but there are many people confused as to what to buy in terms of new TVs etc, as there is so much new technology just around the corner which isn't fully supported yet. For example, we're all expecting HD TV soon, but the number of TV sets that can actually display true HD TV over here is very small - I think the number of models available can be counted on one hand.

Someone who knows better can feel free to correct me on this as I've not kept up with this side of tech. for a while... I'm not gonna be buying a new telly for a while anyway... (cheap students, and bittorrent... images/smilies/biggrin.gif - my current TV works fine anyway at the moment...)

Back to work... images/smilies/sad.gif

Eh, its actually a good thing, it'll allow more radio based services that don't suck, since the FCC can reallocate bandwidth to other services thats currently occupied by TV stations. A single analog TV channel's worth of bandwidth can carry 1 HD and 2 SD channels. The TV stations are dragging their feet (as well as the hardware manufacturers), because they enjoy having an extra channel to put additional advertising on. The hardware manufacturers plan to offer converter boxes for at or below $50 (as of a year ago, things may have changed), for those without cable service.

Also, that extra 6 MHz could be used for high reliability cell phone service, or high reliability radio service, since TV signals are longer wavelength therefore need fewer towers to provide more service.

I believe the US govt mandated all SDTV broadcasts to be HDTV next year unless they pushed it back again.

Actually no, they aren't mandating HD. They are mandating DTV or Digital TV. Stations are not required to broadcast HD content, they can continue to broadcast their standard definition content, it just has to be digital. At the time the mandate would be enforced, stations would have to give back one of their two channels, its their choice which they keep. Theoretically its supposed to go in to effect in July of 2006, but every time they approach a date, it gets pushed further into the future because of the NAB (National Association of Broadcasters) government lobbyists.

Comparison of DivX and h.264

both target size of 700 MB, 2-pass encoding. h.264 looks pretty darn good.

I read a test about that in a german mag... First was the h.264 style Nero recode, second the x.264 codec and then came xvid... Mind you this test was done in relativly low bitrates... Xvid catches up a bit on high bitrate stuff...

Funny: They also tested a beta version of divx fusion... It was last in the test, right after .wmv...
Divxdays are over, I guess... Long live Xvid... I hope the encoding stays like it is for a while... The dvdplayer won't do h.264....

I read an article about that, and those households with cable and satellite service (about 70-80%?) don't need to buy new equipment. The ones who receieve broadcast from attenna will have to buy a new HD reciever.

BTW, I was at the Mac OS X Tiger premere night at my local Apple Store last friday and got to see the new QT7 and H.264 codec in action (using PowerMac G5 and 30-inch monitor), and it was pretty damn impressive, IMO.
