I would try it on windows 7 first, it's been pretty good for me with driver compatibility.

How long do stock Intel CPU fans usually last? I had mine for almost exactly a year and it is running a bit louder than, say, a few months ago. Could it be it is slowly dying, or is it just dirty/dusty or something?

Also, I would like to add, is that it isn't installed as secure as it's supposed to be; there are 4 clips that secure it to the mobo, but I only managed to secure 3 of them (stupid design; cheap, plastic clips). Cooling is still fine, idle temps don't go above 30-40 C.

I just hope it starts showing some signs before it actually dies, like increased temp and noise, so I can buy this Zalman CPU cooler before I have to wait until it is shipped to me. images/smilies/smile.gif

No computer part should be anywhere close to dying after a year.

I'm going to go with dust buildup initially, unless your case has filtered intakes. If your case sits on the floor, it's even more likely. Get a can of compressed air and attack the mofo.

^question related to that :

How often do you need to clean the insides of your PC. Mines on the bottom shelf, so technically not the ground, and AFAIK I have never cleaned it. Coming up on 3 years now, without a problem.

Same question goes for laptop, I guess they're more sensitive to dust and stuff because there's far less room

Did anyone have problems updating their ASUS BIOS recently? I never updated mine since I got it a year ago, and whenever I try to update it with 'ASUS Update", it always says their FTP server is too busy, try again later. Why can't I just get the update from their website?

Depends on how nutty you are. I clean my case at least 3 times a year, wash the dust filters every month. If you're not that anal, you can get away with cleaning it once a year. But three years is enough for me to yell nasty and call pest control on your computer.

Laptops are tricky as they're not intended to be opened and are a hassle to clean. On the flipside they do not have the sucking power of a desktop and take longer to build up lots of dust.

That has to be one of the nerdiest (and hardest to find) books I've ever read, but I still loved it. Recommended by a high school Geometry teacher of course.

Does anybody know If I can play the UK version of a Steam game in Germany? (Assuming I buy it at amazon.uk).

I have just bought a Panasonic TZ7. It takes video in Motion JPEG and AVCHD Lite. I understand that AVCHD is compressed more, so takes up less space. Does that mean that Motion JPEG has a higher quality with larger files? Or are they the same quality, and the only difference is that MJPEG can be played and edited more easily, while you can take more AVCHD?

Edit: Don't worry - I think I've got it. A website tells me that MJPEG is worse in quality, too. But one would assume that this is only a slight disadvantage.

OK, bear with me on this one. Went today with a mate to the local Apple store inside a shopping center to show him the new 3rd gen Touch. He has an first gen one and asked about there being a possibility that his is burning out headphones(first Apple the ones broke secondly faulty AKGs with no sound in left headphone-which he got exchanged). Anyway, the clerk tells us that if you use any other kind of headphones except Apple ones you lose your warranty as the Apple ones have a longer jack. WTF? Is that why on most headphones says "For iPod"? Or was he just stupid and referring to the new 3rd gen ones with mic and controls?

Packaging can be hilarious. I ordered an 8gb micro SDHC card, and because Postman Pat is on strike it got sent via City Link, who saw fit to put it in an A3-size cardboard envelope.
Madness.

I'm quite sure you can. A friend of mine often buys games from the UK Amazon, since they are cheaper there and not censored like the German versions. And he plays Steam a lot. I'll ask him how it works images/smilies/smile.gif

images/smilies/lol.gif At work we ordered a laptop, and it came in a box about 3 times the size of the smaller box inside, with the laptop in that. Sometimes it's just silly.
