All modern CPU's have overheating protection embedded. That's a problem of the past I believe.

Yeah AMDs have been like that for a long time. I've even seen one do that. Wasn't overclocked at all and it wasn't pretty.
I have a water cooling setup on my P4 3.2 Northwood (none of that Prescott crap) and while stuffing around with everything as us watercoolers seem to do, I have inadvertantly sent it well over 100 degrees Celsius for more than a 5 minute stretch on one occasion. Needless to say, the same chip is powering this message and has never shown any signs of unreliability or weak performance. After seeing and smelling one AMD chip go up and what I have done to my P4, no matter how much AMD says they have fixed their heat problems, I could just never go back.

I've been looking for this movie for years. Thanks for posting this!!! I've been an AMD guy since the beginning, the fact that the CPU dies if you take the heatsink off isn't going to change my mind on which processor I'm going to get becuase why would I take the Heatsink off while having the computer on??? Anyways, thanks for the video once again. |

I dont think its a problem with the current range of AMD processors .. The power requirements are much lesser than the current pentium class ...and the heat liberation is much less too.

Indeed, their A64 range has a very good reputation on heat management.

Couple of things about that video...it was obviously trying to prove Intel as the best but it was a particularly fair test. They used two very outdated AMD processors which I believe would have been made before any kind of safety features had been installed to save your CPU. The two Intel's although not perhaps completely up to date are still more advanced and newer than the AMD's. Did you also notice that the temperature sensor was held much closer to the AMD's which would surely increase the temperature reading significantly. There is no way that a Pentium 4 would only be 29 degrees C when you take the Heatsink off, thats just stupid, a CPU has a higher temp. under load even with watercooling...Hmmmm, just a couple of thoughts

Yeah, I was about to say that both Intel's and AMD's newest chips would fry in less than a second with no fans now.

I wonder what would happen if you did that with an AMD 64bit...

Just shutoff at the trip-temperature, I suppose. Most every modern chip/mobo has a trip-temperature or some thermal-throttle to slow the chip down at highish temps.
