Car: Audi TT '08 Rep Power: 164 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Samsung says they will have two PCs ready next month that use solid state drives (SSD). Two devices will be unveiled: Q1, an ultra-mobile computing device; and Q30, a 12.1-inch screen notebook PC. The retail price for the Q1-SSD is $2,430, while the Q30-SSD sells for $3,700. The solid state drive can withstand about twice the impact that would cripple a regular hard disk drive. In addition, stored data can be easily retrieved from flash memory than hard drives when PCs are dropped or liquid is spilled on the device, Samsung added. The drive's read time of 53 Mpbs is three times faster than hard drives, while write time of 28 Mbps is 150 percent faster. Samsung added the Q1-SSD will show video or still photos as well as play audio without having to be booted up first. It was just in March they announced these SSD's. |

Car: 01 Grand Cherokee V8, 97 Thunderbird Rep Power: 12 ![]() | If the speeds are greater, all the more reason, but even if not (size for size) there's still plenty of reasons to be excited about SSD. The only need right now I have for a wicked fast drive is a). Video editing and b). Cache. Incidentally those are also by far the biggest storage requirements, like 500GB+. Everything else, I could as well throw on a, even if slower, SSD. I've also been thru more HDD failures that I care to remember, some with catastropic results. SSD may have a lifespan as well, but they cannot be worse than HDD. Heat, noise and power consumption factors are not to be discarded either. Price/GB is the biggest drawback right now, but then so was that of HDD's and RAM in the old days. |
