If by better you mean poorer game performance, more system resources used, lack of driver support, potential instability, etc, then yes, it is indeed better. images/smilies/tongue.gif

1. Easier: Windows Vista makes it faster and easier than ever to find, use, manage, share, and enjoy information–on your PC and on the web.
2. More entertaining: Enjoy your entire digital entertainment library in full glory on your PC or even on your TV with Windows Media Center. View your photos in a cinematic slide show, browse your music collection by cover art, easily play DVDs, watch and record TV shows, download movies, and project your home videos.
3. Better connected: It's faster to start and end a session at your computer–the new sleep state conserves battery life while enabling you to pause and resume work in just seconds through a simple press of the power button. Enjoy your favorite TV shows, movies, pictures, games, home videos, and music–on the plane or in the hotel.
4. Safer: Windows Vista automates the processes that help maintain the health and security of your PC, freeing you to focus on the things you enjoy the most. Enjoy scheduled back ups, performance self-tuning and diagnostics and more.

Personally i love the sidebar, sure there are widgets that do it for XP but just not as good imo.

I love that you can search anywhere, no more looking for a program in the start bar!

I love the way it looks with Aero on, sure looks are not everything but it's a much nicer place to be than cartoon village XP.

There's probably a lot that i don't notice so props for that too.

Like i said i have not had a single problem with Vista, i don't know if it's luck or im a software god..

I have been running Vista for almost a year. I haven't had a single issue; be it system lockups, driver support or backwards compatability. Compared with XP, it's my opinion that it's much better and easyer to use. I'm running it on a Dell Latitude D620 with 2GB RAM, and for normal use it's hoovering around only 50% of that, as you can see on the attached picture of my desktop.

Eiter you're all too young or you've just forgot how much a OS of exploits and ass XP was prior to SP1. It's no different with Vista and most of the complaints, like Lilleput said, stem from lacking driver and 3rd party support. Over time Vista will grown into a OS of its own right. Much like the beloved XP you're using now, which btw. was accused of all the same things when compared to Windows 98.

Slower in games...bla...bla...lacking support...yadda...unstable...will never top 98....

I've heard it all before.

I've had programs like that for Windows 3.1. They weren't useful then, they aren't useful now.

Would you elaborate on that?

I got tired of cartoon village XP too, because it's incoherent, but after I tacked on a Windows Styles skin (no performance loss, btw. It's arguably the best way to reskin XP), I'm more than happy with it.

I think it has lots of useful things: Clock, temp, program launcher, CPU/memory/mobo/HDD/GPU temp monitor, fan speed monitor, voltage monitor, network monitor, utorrent monitor, safe eject thingy. All of which I use. (my sidebar)

I might consider Vista in 2010, once it's up to SP3 and the average PC of the time has the resources to properly cope with it (i.e. 4GB+ RAM, 1TB HDD etc).

In the meantime, XP serves an important niche, as it's relatively simple and it works. So, I'll stick with it for now.

I don't think we're living in the same world mate.. Can you post a picture of the recommended requirements of Vista in your dimension?

lemme predict what tone76 will say: 8 core server board, 16 gb mem, quad-sli 8800-ultras, 8tb storage, etc.

The odd thing is, my computer runs vista amazingly, and it's only half of tone's "required specs." And BTW, I've only used 60 gigs of space, including Flight simulator 10 (15gb), GTA San Andreas (4.67gb), Shadowrun (2.8gb), Crysis demo (2gb), and ~6.5 gigs in iTunes. That comes out to ~28 gigs, which is still a lot, but nowhere near the amount of storage you recommend.

I think you hit the nail on the head here.

Whereas other software manufacturers beta test either internally or publicly, Microsoft eschews convention and makes you poor saps pay.

I WILL upgrade to Vista; it won't be any time in the near future.

*shudder*

I'd only get Windows 7 if Microsoft learn from their mistakes, obviously.

Ah, but this is the problem Vista has. The basic Windows Vista Home Premium, the most common Vista OS, does not support more than 3GB of ram. And it never will. Vista is flawed because under all that pretty skin it is as old as XP but because of that pretty skin it demands a lot. Basicly what I am sayin is that MS is shooting themselves in the head with a cannon because they keep pushing a 32bit OS to average consumers.

It's like one of those 70+old american grannies from Los Angeles they make documentaries about. Constantly going to plastic surgery to get younger but they're still old and they will die.

You must buy Vista Ultimate if you want support for over 3GB of ram. XP has gotten more system heavy over the years because of updates and so on. The same will happen to Vista, and we shall see if 3GB is enough. Somehow I doubt it. XP supported plenty of ram when it came out... 3GB and that's plenty for XP.

I will eventually upgrade to vista, but I tried to rip a TV show on my sister's vista laptop, and my Dazzle and Pinnacle Studio makes it Blue Screen.

I don't want to buy new software... Vista can wait.

I'm running XP on my desktop with 2gig of ram and it's using around 500meg which is around 25% of 2gig instead of 50%. On my Laptop that is running Vista with the same programs installed, in fact even less installed than on my XP machine. I have some processes running in XP to make XP look like Vista while I obviously don't on my Vista Lappy. My Vista laptop with 2gig of ram just like my desktop and your computer uses rough the same amount of ram yours does, it's at 50% almost constantly. It did however weirdly drop to 35% when it locked up badly once while I was running Firefox, took me 2 hours to get it rebooted properly. Some websites lock Firefox up in Vista while the same sites work fine in Firefox in XP, I don't have a clue why but both my brother and I have the same problem on our Vista Laptops of which both are different brands. Also there is a terrible problem with network file transfers of over 300meg between two Vista machines.

Let me ask, is Vista's teething problems anywhere close to what XP had? Because I had XP since early 2001, and it wasn't that catastrophic.

Oh, and on the subject, I only upgrade Operating Systems when I get the new computer, OEM. My compute
