He can also get a Sempron images/smilies/wink.gif
Intel says the Celeron line is over, so I wouldnt go there.

As far as mobos go, Asus+Intel, MSI+AMD64. Its the best combination.

You can get great prices, if you go for package deals, CPU+MB+RAM or CPU+MB.

if buying a new computer; first check the usual suspects to compare prices.

www.pricewatch.com
www.newegg.com
www.savesome.net
www.gottadeal.com
www.outpost.com

If you have a fry's electronics store near you; they usually have deals for a p4 3.2 w/ mobo (dunno brand) for around $189. the outpost link above is their internet store.

Jason is in Hong Kong, so there's likely no fry's nearby. images/smilies/biggrin.gif and many of those sites won't ship internationally (newegg might though).

Fry's is a nice store though (I have been to the one outside Atlanta, unfortunately thats the closest one to where I live, about 500 miles away) images/smilies/sad.gif

yeah well, today we went out to get a new pc and we got a custom built one for $2800.

the specs are

2400 sempon chip

really cool msi MB. its got built in graphics card, lan (internet card) 5.1 sound thingy, usb 2.0

160gb hd 2mb cahce

DVD burner. 2.4x duel layer. now thinkin bout it should have given like 40 bucks more for a 4x one.

his old pc we sold for 462HKD. asus mother board with a 1ghz centrino chip and 256mb SD ram. good deal when compared to the books and other buyers.

from the old pc we putin the HD (its only 20.5GB but spins at 72K, ibm deskstar. really amazing how its in there dont u think, this pc is quite old. must have cost him alot when he got it coz its such a fast spinner lol

and lill bits like the usb 2.0 card we put back in,

theres no floppy, though the specs say it should. but then the pc looks better with out the floppy so who gives. we can pic one up for like 1.5 usd if we need it but we gonna get a flash drive or just burn on to cd's

overall great bargin. want more details just say :>:> so happy bout the deal.

Yeah I am only building a new one because the machine I currently use for a file server on my home network is getting close to dying.

Thats gonna come back to haunt you. If he want to even "consider" playing games, get a dedicated vga card.
Recommended decent gamers card on a budget, ati 9600xt 256mb.

don't ever go with built in graphics card, I have one and I never used it... I couldn't even get more than 30fps in counterstrike on local servers images/smilies/lol.gif

I would suggest he busy an nVidia 6 series graphics card. they have Sli technology which doubles the performace of the graphics, but it only runs on 8X AGP slots..

Actually, SLi is for PCI-E and it doesn't give you "double the graphic performance", it gives about a 70% performance increase. Of course, the CPU will always be the bottle-neck of the SLi setup, you need an extremely strong PSU to power both cards.

All of this, when cards basically double in performance every year or so. SLi, IMO doesn't really add-up if you're on a budget, even if you aren't it's not too smart.

One of the best buys for video cards right now, if you're going PCI-E is the ATI Radeon X800XL, it has 16 pipelines just like the X800XT and it can be overclocked to X800XT levels with good cooling, it doesn't cost too much, either.

why does he need such a highend card? If he plays games casually, then a good 9800pro should do it for him.
