CPU: quad is overrated IMO. Last I heard, your money is better spend on a dual core.

Video: what's the prices like? 8800 GT will run pretty much every game but Crysis on max settings. I also hear the ATi 4850 is badass and cheaper.

(Memory = RAM, not storage aka hard drives images/smilies/wink.gif)

OS: OEM = tied to your mobo which means you can't transfer it to a new PC. Up to you. Personally I went with Vista Ultimate via... other methods.

This is not a bad set up at all. I personally wouldn't bother with Vista, XP would run much faster on the box and if you are adamant about buying cost less (are they still selling it though?).

Vista works fine for me and actually is more stable, but you gotta have 4GB to make real use of it.

Quad = Epic

Go for something like Q9450 or Q9650.

You won't notice a frame or two less in games (if that), but you will notice stuff like encoding, decoding and unraring being a LOT faster.

Forget the 9800GTX and get the ATi 4850. I got one for $145 after rebate and it kills most of the cards from Nvidia. Also, I would skip the 500GB HDD and get the Western Digital 640GB (uses two 320GB platters) for must faster throughput and speed.

Well the Q9450 cost twice as much as the Q6700 and you only get 0.2 Ghz more.

But which video card will last longer? The 9800 or Ati? My target game is Fallout3 which comes out sometime this fall(hopefully)

I would go with the ATI. Remember, the 9800 is an 8800GTS 512 with higher clock speeds. Also, see if the 4870 is in your price range.

That won't make sense when the rest of your hardware, there would be a bottleneck somewhere..

If speed is a requirement then a RAID 0 setup is a must.

You connect two disks of the same size (and type?).

Raid 0 is called stripping. It increases the performance of both disks but if one goes, you lose all your data.

Two or more harddrives combined as one. It alternates blocks between the harddrives. Personally I wouldn't bother. Consumer raid controllers (like the Nvidia ones) are just over glorified software raid and will sap your CPU (may not be an issue if you go for a quad set-up). If you want speed from raid buy a dedicated controller (will cost well over $100).

So the order is in:

Intel Core 2 Quad Q9300
Abit IP35P
3D Club Geforce 9800 GTX 512
2 x 2GB 800 Mhz
Western Digital 500 GB Caviar
LG DVD+/- RW DL 20x
NZXT Hush Silent Black
Windows Vista Home Premium
550W

Now I only have to find a suitable screen
