Default Software for extracting frames

Can someone suggest some good software (preferably free) for saving frames from a video as pictures? Last night I made a video of a storm and I want to save some of the individual lightning strikes as .jpg's. Windows Movie Maker does it, but it makes the pictures too small and it doesn't display every single frame.

thanks images/smilies/smile.gif

EDIT:

Thanks man, it's works great images/smilies/thumbsup.gif

Next Question:

What's a good program for making smooth animated gif's from video footage, like swek's avatar of James in the Honda Element, or Viper's avatar?

Thanks for the question and for the answer... Have been thinking about making the same question, but was afraid that Renesis would come with "REPOST!! Do a search..." images/smilies/tease.gif images/smilies/lol.gif images/smilies/lol.gif

Ok, here is my first question:
How do you get the GIFs to play at normal speed? It seems that no matter what I set the frame rate the GIF is still slower than it should be.

I've never notice that. To test it I've just encoded an avi file to a gif. It had the exact same lengtht and played at the same speed as the original. images/smilies/dunno.gif

thanks for testing it swek. Maybe the video dimensions are too large on the avi file I'm using? It's 640 x 480. I'm going to try it on one of my other PCs and see if the results are similiar. If they are maybe I'll try shrinking down the video dimensions with virtualdub or something.
