Sony reveals PlayStation 3 prices

In a press conference at E3 on Monday, Sony Computer Entertainment finally announced the launch date and pricing for its upcoming PlayStation 3 console. SCE America President and CEO Kazuo Hirai said the console would launch in two flavors on November 11 in Japan and on November 17 in North America and Europe.

The cheapest version of the console will feature a 20GB hard drive and will retail for $499 in the U.S., €499 in Europe, and $549 in Canada.

A variant with a 60GB hard drive will also ship for $599 in the U.S., €599 in Europe, and $659 in Canada.

Hirai did not mention any differences other than the extra storage space between the $499 and $599 flavors.

In addition to the launch and pricing information, Sony also revealed the PlayStation 3's new "redesigned" controller.While the controller looks virtually identical to the current PS2 controller, user wrist movements can also be translated into onscreen movement. In a demonstration, a virtual duck was made to jump out of the water by moving the controller upwards. Sony is following in the footsteps of Nintendo, which has opted for a one-handed motion sensitive controller for its Wii console.

Yeah, well those prices in USD are atrocious. I'm glad I bought a 360. I got the next generation experience a year earlier and got the top of the line xbox for $200 less than the PS3.

Well, I've tried most of the games for 360 at my friend's place, and haven't been that impressed with it so far. There's no game for 360 that's out right now that would entice you to actually go buy the system to play that one game. The best game for 360 so far is Elderscrolls: Oblivion by a long shot, and that's not even 360 exclusive. I really hope for you 360 fans out there that Halo 3 is all Microsoft makes it out to be, otherwise, the 360 is cooked.

The PS3 on the other hand.....wow.....i'd give an arm and leg to play these games.

Warhawk looks amazing, especially since it utilizes the tilt function of the new controller.
Final Fantasy XIII: how could you go wrong with FFXIII?
Grand Theft Auto IV just go announced for PS3.
Gran Turismo 5: 'nuff said.
Metal Gear Solid 4: again, looks amazing
I could go on and on, but i'll end it here. So far, $659CND for a 60GB PS3 sounds like a bargain.

Apparently, there's going to be 2 Gran Turismo games for the PS3, one is apparently called Gran Turismo HD and maybe the other is Vision GT? That's the impression that this article gave me.

Yeah it is rediculous but remember the story with the PS1 & PS2 - they both came out at something like $1200 and then three years later when all the good games came out, like GT3, it was $699 (when I bought) and now its like $250 or so.

I just think it's a little lame the cheap version dosen't come with HDMI output so you can't take full advantage of the Blue-ray tech.
I think i'm going to wait till GT5 or what ever it's going to be called comes out around 2008 and then buy a used 60 GB version.

Edit: WOOT, theres bikes in the GT HD screens! Saw a interview with the head guy behind Tourist trophy (new PD Bike game) and he said they had development demos with bikes in GT4 more or less for fun, but i didn't think it maybe had something to do with GT5

That's your opinion and you are welcome to it, but millions of people disagree with you. I think the tilt controller is a gimmick, and won't get used by most developers. Also this holiday season that gap will widen, because there will be xboxes on shelves, where the PS3 will still be in warehouses, or on ships.

Final Fantasy = snore, GTA4 will be on the 360 when it releases (and you'll be able to play it months, if not years before on the PS3, because we all know sony sucks at hardware releases). GT5 and MGS4 may be good games, but not worth $720. I also hope you realize that the trailers Sony has been parading around are pre-rendered, the games will not necessarily look that good, AND the gameplay I have seen of the PS3 is about the same as what I have seen on my xbox360. Buy into the sony hype machine all you want, but their press conference hasn't convinced me to spend $700+ on a PS3.

I agree with you, it's not like I'm trying to convince you that the system you bought with your hard-earned cash (or your parent's cash) is a piece of shit....because it certainly isn't. The 360 is a very impressive piece of hardware, and I'm not laughing at anyone who bought one. But like you stated above, all of this is MY opinion. Shouldn't I be buying a system based on my opinions and not those of others? I prefer FFXIII to whatever RPG comes out for the 360. I prefer Gran Turismo to Forza. I prefer God of War to Too Human (from the early screens at least). My XBOX buddies are all trying to get me to buy an xbox or a 360, and are always telling me this and that and how my PS2 sucks. They don't seem to understand that if you buy a video game console, it should be one that you love, and not other people. I apologize if my opinions sounded like I was putting down the 360 and dismissing it as a good system, which I certainly wasn't trying to, because the 360 is very impressive, but like all things in life, especially cars, you buy the one you love. And to be honest, shelling out $1000+ on a new PS3 + games is not an issue for me. It's not as if money's no object for me (I work in a supermarket), but I just felt as if the money spent is totally worth it.

Oh and by the way, Formula One '06 is coming for the PS3, and because it's made by Sony, it's only for PS3 .

sheesh, and to think we call Microsoft M$!!! maybe we need to coin a new term, P$3...

tell the truth, power wise, it's not as far ahead of the xbox 360 as sony will have you believe. it's only a bee's dick really. I was a playstation man i'll have a ps2 over an xbox1 any day. but i'm afraid my next gen dollars are already spent and I'm very, very happy with my decision. Especially after having watched the Halo 3 trailer, played the Test Drive unlimited demo and played PGR3 on live, i know i'm exactly where i want to be.

Sony said the PS3 will be their platform for the next 10 years so the price isnt that surprising. I'd wait for a GT:HD PS3 bundle til I get one. Hope it works with the logitech steering wheel.

vision was just an early demo version of the next GT. it was basically GT4 with some upgrades running on the new hardware.

I doubt anyone can bet 10yrs on any electronic device in todays world. Its just not feasible. I mean 10 years? Too long IMHO.

im gonna have to wait atleast a year or so before im willing to spend all that cash. $600 for a game console?! you could by PS2, Xbox, and Gamecube and a few games with that!
i just hope GTA 4 will be more along the lines of San Andreas.
