All of the Acer laptops I've seen had really poor build quality. Better brands I've seen are: Dell, Sony, Toshiba, and Asus. Dell's are not all that bad but the quality control seems to be spotty, their new Studio line, XPS 1330 are great computers and are a step in the right direction. Sony is good but expensive for what you get.

If they sell the Asus eeepc 901 in the US, try to get your hands on that. Otherwise steer clear of Sony Vaio or Acer. HP-Compaq is good, there is a small one with an 8.9" screen.

I can only comment on what is in Australia.

I went ahead and bought the Acer and before everyone jumps on my back about it let me explain.

I just received a government check which I'm not entirely sure what is was for for $590 (bought the one for $579.99)

I just need a laptop that will at least get me through this year until I graduate and once I do I'll have a good paying job and will be able to afford something of much higher quality.

I thought the Acer delivered everything I need for a very very reasonable price and almost all laptops will give you at least a year of working order.

So this amounts to essentially a "free" laptop because I bought it with money I didn't count on having.

We'll see how it goes and I'll give you my report. Thanks for all the help guys.

Good luck and godspeed with the acer. I'm sure it'll hold up for at least 2 years.

Get a nice desktop afterwards images/smilies/tongue.gif

Congrats man images/smilies/smile.gif I'm guessing the check was the economic stimulus check that all tax payers received? I just got mine not too long ago as well.

Honestly I'm not sure. I didn't think I was eligible for it, but the bank took it and it's in my account.

I think just about everyone who filed taxes was eligible (though there were probably some exceptions). My check was right around $600 too.

I was about to post something about how Acer is basically the Yugo/Lada of the PC world, but given that the OP has already bought one, I'll refrain from peeing in his cereal and will just congratulate him on his purchase and wish him luck. images/smilies/wink.gif

Next time buy a Lenovo. You can't kill those with an axe.

My previous Thinkpad was ten years old when I dropped it onto a stone floor. Didn't kill it, merely jostled the battery around, and booted back up fresh as old. I'm keeping this T40 until it becomes completely useless; as my primary computer it's doing a heckuva job, and I have no reason to replace it.
