Default Suggestions for a monitor

Pretty soon, I'll be buying a 360 Elite, and I need a monitor to go along with it. I am having a bit of a problem finding a suitable one, so I humbly ask for your help.

Some info:
  • My budget is roughly $250. I can stretch it a little, but I don't want to touch $300
  • I'd love for the monitor to have built-in speakers
  • A direct connection from the Elite to the monitor, without a need for adapters, would be ideal

Help, please? Thanks for any and all suggestions.

Hanns·G HG-216DPB Black 21.6" 5ms HDMI Widescreen LCD Monitor 300 cd/m2 1000:1 Built in Speakers
  • HDMI - so straight from the 360 elite to the monitor in HD
  • 1680x1050 support
  • Built in speakers
  • 21.6" display area
  • $230, way below your budget, so no need for vaseline/KY gel.

I don't know why you would want to use the built in speakers... normally they are pretty shit, rather drop some moolah on a seperate set of speakers.

You don't even need HDMI. There are $10 cables that have HDMI on one end (the 360) and DVI on the other end (the monitor).

Just for space-saving, really; I don't have a lot of room for anything, at the moment, and the little bit I have left will be taken up by the 360 and the monitor.

Thanks for the suggestion!

Please, spend a couple bucks and stick them behind the monitor or something...

My monitor has two 3W speakers (around 2 inches in diameter) and god they sound like shit. I don't get how anyone could stand using them for anything other than Windows dings and such.

no problem, you might want to take a look at this combination as well.

Acer AL2216Wbd Black 22" 5ms Widescreen LCD Monitor with HDCP support 300 cd/m2 700:1 - $230

+

KINGWIN 6 ft. (1800 mm) HDMI Male to DVI Male Extension Cable $6

So roughly $230 as well, and you will get a lovely 22" monitor, HDCP support and the cable works great with Xbox360.

Alright, but how exactly would I wire them to the 360? Or do I plug them in to the monitor?

Get a composite (coax thingy) to mini-jack cable and hook the red and white leads up to your speakers. Then hook the HDMI or whatever up to the monitor.

At least I assume you can do that. My speakers have optical input, so I'm using that instead with my PS3.

How does it look man? I was thinking about possibly doing something similar with my 360 eventually.

Looks like this (sorry for the bad quality):

http://pic.phyrefile.com/a/an/anonymous/2008/06/06/DSC00059.JPG

On recommendation from my brother, I actually wound up buying a Samsung SyncMaster 2220WM. Color's amazing. The two satelitte speakers are from Cyber Acoustics, with a subwoofer not pictured. The only tricky bit was the wiring; HDMI to DVI cable providing video, then AV to stereo adapter plugged into the 360 with a stereo to mini-jack adapter plugged into it plugging into the monitor's audio in, with the speakers connected to the monitor's headphone jack for the sound.

The result is amazing, though. Crisp picture, rich colors, and the little speakers are actually quite good.

Right on. So is the video in 720p then? Or can you go up to 1080p with that monitor? (I don't know the specs on that monitor)

I actually don't have a clue, but I should qualify what you quoted by adding that I jumped from an Xbox played on a standard TV to the above setup, so of course, I'm going to be awed.
