are you alllowed to do that? images/smilies/blink.gif

if i did that at my school i would be out in a flash. i doubt you will get it to work on their network, but going into the router's controls would let you set the ports. you will need to go to the IT technicians to find out what ports you need to open. it really depends how the network runs, and how you log into your account.

maybe someone else can be a bit more helpful.

What does one do on a network at school, anyway? Exchange stupid text documents and silly stick-figures created in MS Paint? Not that your school would allow this, in the first place.

You don't want to know... the shinanigans the students here pull off sometimes.... They have even completely emptied out PCs over here, just took everything out.

why would they not allow this? i'm just trying to get wireless in my room. I see other networks that are also in the dorm too and we don't have to log in to get online unless it's the wireless connections in the lounges.

Probably because wireless connections pose a large security risk. It isn't difficult for someone outside the Uni to get in to the network through a wireless router, even if it has all the security turned on.

Your router should work no different than a net card in your computer in the way that it can establish connectivity with the "mothership". You can set the router up with the fixed numbers but that's unlikely to work of course in the uni environment. So set it to obtain the IP automatically. Hook up Internet port on the router to the switch. This will pull the address from the uni's network via their DHCP. Then on the router you have to define the private network address that is from the different pool than what the router is getting from uni's router via DHCP. Most home routers come default with the 192.168.1.1 private pool and that very well might work since the uni is not likely operating on that range. On an off chance that it does, you can go with i.e. 172.16.1.1 or any other "private" address. You may need to define manually the DNS server addresses in some instances (which should mirror those obtained currently by your computer when connected directly to the switch). Running ipconfig/all should give you all the information currently given to your computer by the uni's network router to help you set your own up.

well i got it to just hook up to the internet which is a start but I am still unable to use anything like DC++ on the wireless, any idea on how to make it work with a d-link router. But thank you for your help.

You need to have port(s) open on the main router, you know, the one the school runs for the entire school network? That's why everyone is laughing at you. Due to security risks. the school is not going to allow you to forward ports just so you can run DC++ or any other program like it.

Probably true, but ( I have no idea what DC++ is, I'm assuming it's some kind of P2P program) if he could have used it while hooked up to the original switch (was that the case?), then he should be able to use it via WIFI<->router<->router<->Internet.

If it was the case you may have to "open up" your d-link router, that is setup port forwarding, enable external access (for wireless and otherwise) and disable/tweak various built-in firewall measures (and also those in your computer if you have a f/w running there).
