Those sony's look good, especially with free shipping. Most of the vintage speakers I'd recommend are also quite heavy and cost around 100 dollars to ship.

120 isn't too bad.....

If I could get those for $120 shipped here, they'd be in my house by now.

isn't 320 kbps roughly the same as lossless?

Well it's about as good as you can get with an mp3, so either way.

Anyway, the end result was crap. It seems my 1.6 Ghz P4 will only give compressed mp3s with stuttered audio. Anybody know of a light-on-resources compressor?

i was going to say about me doing some mp3 compression to 320 from a cd with a p2 334Mhz pc, but then i remembered that i don't have good soundsystem to begin with.
So i'm not going to say "it was nice to listen and it only took 5mins per song to compress with a musicmatch jukebox X.x.x version in 2002 or something".

So I got my TF10pros from Logitech earlier this week, and they're sounding good.

Compared to the Westone 3 though, the TF10pro is a bit more laid back, a bit colder on the overall tonal presentation compared to the Westone. The mids also don't seem as well, I guess, modulated, but as I've only been testing them out of my Cowon D2 and not my proper portable rig it'll be interesting to see how these perform.

Might need to get a set of custom tips for them though. I had no trouble with the SF5pro's fit, but the TF10pro has a much larger driver unit and can feel like its loose even though the seal is perfect.

Since NSX keeps talking about his headphones, I'm now going to yack about my vintage receivers and speakers.

After listening to my Infinity Qb speakers that I picked up on craigslist for several weeks, I have to say, these are probably the best speakers I have ever heard. If I give them enough room to breathe and plenty of power, they are just stupendous. I've been told that I need about a 200wpc power amp to really get the best out of them. They sure to seem to eat the ~70wpc that my Technics SA-5460 can put out and ask for more. I think the best word I can use to describe their sound is balanced. All frequencies are present, and no area overwhelms another. Pretty amazing for a 33 year old amp and 31 year old speakers. This stuff is clearly from a time before planned obsolescence.

Your problem lies elsewhere. Either your source is messed up or you're using a bad encoder/transcoder.

I had a similar set-up to you, when I was a kid I got a Technics amp, CD player and later a twin tape deck and used my old man's Jensen speakers. Very satisfactory. The speakers eventually gave out (foam degraded - might get em fixed) so I bought some new ones but the amp is still going strong. The remote doesn't work anymore though.

Good quality hi-fi gear and camera equipment transcend time.

When my parents were still going out (about 22 years ago now) , my father bought a pair of Kenwood speakers for my mothers' Mustang. Those speakers are currently in my Grand Prix, as they put the stock ones (which weren't exactly garbage anyway) to shame.

I've got also my parents old set of Bose 401 floor speakers. Not the best either, but not bad really- they still go for $100-300 on ebay, and we still have the original box for them.

Now if only I could find a good on Luxman tube amp/preamp to run my turntable and 8-track player through.

I don't think 8 track ever was popular in Australia, but my old man has a reel to reel.

Sound quality reached a certain level and then size, convenience, speed etc took over as driving forces for R&D.

Random thought: There's a certain Panasonic stereo that just keeps popping up in my life. My sister had one, my friend had one and it's been in more movies and TV shows than I can remember (last one being Right at Your Door). Anyone here had one? It looks something like this...

I'm sure you will be able to find a good deal. I know fry's.com often has good deals. At one point they had some JBL Balboa floorstanders for 69.99 each which is a screaming deal.

Indeed they do. Every component in my audio system other than my DAC and phono cartridge is older than me and still work brilliantly. I'm fairly sure my speakers have had the crossovers rebuilt and the woofers refoamed though. I've also had to reform my second pair of speakers which my dad gave to me.

I would have a go at refoaming those Jensens, its really straight forward.
