| Extra RAM really helps speed things along, keeping the paging file on the hard drive from being used as much. I noticed a considerable difference after upgrading a few months back, as well. Files of any size will open quicker, not just really big ones, due to how the paging file works. ![]()

When I updraded by 512 to 1.5G, I got an extra (approx) 19 minutes available on a fresh recharge-reboot, compared to the 512. |

| Not really a toy but anyway, more of a necessity. The DVD-R on my laptop is playing up so I got a HP dvd 940. It does all the formats and Lightscribe which I think should be good when I get some Lightscribe disks. ![]()

| Basically you get special discs which have a special ink coating. When you want to put a label on it, you put the disc in upside down and the laser activates this special ink. You can make very intricate detailed images, the only limitation is it's only B/W although you can get dodgy coloured discs for a bit of variety. Here's an example of the kinda stuff you can do. ![]()

Rep Power: 23 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | That litescribing looks cool. I didn't know the quality was actually that good. But aren't the disks quite expensive?

| Not devastatingly expensive. You can pick them up for about 50p a sling which is cheaper than buying normal discs of similar quality, labels and then paying for the ink.

| Mine was £50. I didn't want the Lightscribe in particular, it was just the cheapest external DVD writer from a reputable make.

Car: 2001 Mercury Cougar V6 Rep Power: 55 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I bought a lightscribe drive from newegg for $32. ( http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16827151136 )They are selling, with a rebate, Verbatim lightscribe media for $2.00 for 20. I've only used Verbatim and HP. The verbatims discs seems to burn faster in the drive (it's a samsung) but the HP lightscribe media had better contrast. The darks were darker, and the images appeared sharper than the Verbatim. I wasn't so sure about lightscribe, but man...it's really cool, and gives the burned discs a sense of permenance... Not only that, but it's impressive to every non-tech-geek who's seen 'em. |
