Doesn't jailbreaking the iPhone give you more than just unlocking it? I thought by jailbreaking you could install 3rd party applications and go back to older versions and stuff?

Well thats something i will have to do when i make up my mind about buying an iphone (broke atm images/smilies/mad.gif), if i get the phone, i'd expect it to work all the time, regardless where i am and what simcard im using. Also, because I travel on a regular basis, and it would be quite shit if the phone is locked, i mean.. wtf am i gonna do with a phone that wont work in SA??

How much are they selling the iphone now? isnt it around $500 to $600 bucks?? Thats a lot of money for a phone if you ask me, is it worth the price tag?

Its either the iphone... or i can wait until November and get a free phone through Vodacom SA.

Does it behave as a MSC when it's jailbroken or do you still need shitTunes?

What do you mean by MSC? You can use your iPod and iPhone as a USB storage device as it is, you just need to enable the box in iTunes for it to be activated.

If you mean to transfer songs without using iTunes, you can use something like EphPod. Alternatively, you can wait for a Cowon convergence device, I'm sure they'll come out with one during this decade.

Nah, i mean use it completely as a mass storage device, without any other software. Only then will the scales be shifted for me.

You can do that right now... you just need to connect it to a computer with iTunes and simply enable storage device access. You don't need to have iTunes installed.

Will everything then work like that? Will the iPhone behave as an MSC untill i disable it (or upgrade firmware) for everything i'd want to transfer? And i can get rid of shitTunes?

I believe so... I have a 4G iPod so things are probably not the exact same as the iPhone. But yeah, it will stay as a USB drive in My Computer until you disable it again through iTunes or restore the firmware on the device.

You still need a program to dump music files onto it, but like I said there's alternatives like EphPod.

That sucks though. Sure there will be a way for an easy downgrade/jailbreak/unlock very soon.. I'd check out iphone-forums.de

/Blast, I just updated my iPod Touch to clean it for resale and those bloody wankers erased the Software-Upgrade I bought e few days ago. images/smilies/dry.gif
//Blast², I'm the bloody wanker for erasing the Upgrade myself, I guess.

Yes, jailbreaking opens it for 3rd-Party-Apps, which you need to unlock and activate it.

There are several workarounds to get rid of iTunes, but I didn't looked into it so much, because I kind of like it..

That does suck about iPods... nowadays I don't use mine so much because all the music on it is old and I don't want to add the new ones to iTunes. I use my Nintendo DS instead, just dump the files on the SD card. images/smilies/tongue.gif

^^ I just told the guy to send it anyway. Until its here there will be the new ziphone version, even though the current one supposedly works just as well...

About that Itunes thing: I'm a bit like Ice here, I have everything sorted my way, so folders called "Artist - Album title" and files like " Tracknumber with 0x or 1xx/2xx for multi cd albums - Artist - Track" Same with the tags, but all cleaned up, no excess info other the before mentioned.

How much will Itunes mess with that? I wanna keep my nicley styled foobar as audio player...

Mh, i guess you could try iPhone PC Suite or iPhone List. But as i said, my medialibrary is beautifully done by iTunes so i don't know if those are any good.

^ Basically, what I wanted to know is, if Itunes leaves my file structure alone..? Heard stuff like, it puts all your files in one bucket...

I'm all for the hijack. The sooner we can make the iPhone our MSC bitch, the better.

EDIT: If anyone is still unclear as to what MSC is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB_mas...e_device_class

Quote:
The USB mass storage specification does not require any particular file system to be used on conforming devices. Instead, it provides a simple interface to read and write sectors of data—much like the low-level interface used to access any hard drive—using the "SCSI transparent command set." Operating systems may treat the USB drive like a hard drive, and can format it with any file system they like.
Because of its ubiquity and relative simplicity, the most common file system on embedded devices such as USB flash drives, cameras, or digital audio players is Microsoft's FAT or FAT32 file system with (optional) support for long names. Large USB-based hard disks may come formatted with NTFS, which is much less supported outside Microsoft Windows. However, a keydrive or any other device may be formatted using another filesystem (for example HFS Plus on an Apple Macintosh, or Ext2 under Linux, or Unix File System under Solaris or BSD). Of course, this choice may limit other operating systems' ability to access the contents of the device.
Basically, plug&play hard drive.

Ah, now I see. Yes, you can decide if you want iTunes to mess with your files or not.

I'm not sure if I would use it like that, but I really would appreciate it if Apple would at least give me the chance to decide myself. Ah well, let's see what the time brings, sooner or later they gonna open it up.
